Department of Sanitation - New York City (DSNY)

This is an UNOFFICIAL group and is NOT directly associated with DSNY. This is simply a "fan group."

After creating the Mack Refuse Trucks group, I found that there is a huge amount of pics on here from the Department of Sanitation New York City (DSNY), but no group for them.

This group is for ANY pics of DSNY equipment. It's ONLY THE LARGEST SANITATION DEPARTMENT IN THE WORLD.

ALL PICTURES MUST BE DSNY equipment -- This means: trucks, street sweepers, and other support vehicles (supervisor vehicles, mechanics, etc.). Pictures can also include facilities or anything with the DSNY logo.

From the Official DSNY website:
www.nyc.gov/html/dsny/html/about/about.shtml

Since 1881, when the New York City Department of Sanitation - originally known as the Department of Street Cleaning - was founded, waste collection and disposal have come virtually full circle.

At the end of the 19th century, one of the Department's most prolific commissioners, Colonel George Waring, instituted efficiencies and waste reduction programs that foretold the programs of today -- including recycling, street sweeping and a dedicated uniformed cleaning and collection force.

Today, the Department is the world's largest, collecting over 12,000 tons of residential and institutional refuse and recyclables a day. The City's businesses, whose waste is collected by private carting companies, generate another 13,000 tons of refuse each day. And under the leadership of Commissioner John J. Doherty, New York City's streets are cleaner today then they have been in over 30 years.

To meet these challenges, the Department's resources are:

    * 7,899 Uniformed Sanitation Workers and Supervisors
    * 2,041 Civilian Workers

The Department serves the City out of 59 Districts, using approximately 5,700 vehicles that include:

    * 2,230 collection trucks
    * 450 mechanical street sweepers
    * 275 specialized collection trucks
    * 365 salt/sand spreaders
    * 298 front end loaders, and
    * 2,360 various other support vehicles

Check out these other GREAT GROUPS!

If you like DSNY's Mack Truck's then you'll probably like this group too:

If you need permission that means the photos are either "private" or viewable by certain people only. Wish I could help, but this group is not directly associated with DSNY.

I was told that the two-letter codes are the batch numbers from the purchase contracts. I don't know if the individual letters actually mean something (like if 'c' and 'd' actually mean something) or are just randomly assigned, but I'll try to find out.

I wish I had an answer for you. I think someone told me the 2 letter code has something to do with the configuration of the truck and how it was ordered. Hopefully someone will come by and enlighten us.

nycdob posted a new topic:

I 've always been curious about the fleet numbers of DSNY Garbage trucks. I know that the number 25 refers to "refuse collection vehicle" and that the three digit number is the unit number and that M4 or Bx12 etc, etc, is the district to which the vehicle is assigned. My question refers to the two letter code i.e CN, CW, CU, DF, between the 25 and the three digit unit number. What do those letters mean?
