I had been "just living with" the erratic control wheel for quite a while, but hungrygary's video (link posted above) of his solution for the problem worked. The wheel functions perfectly now! I used DeoxIT D5 on mine. Right product for the job. Though WD-40 might work, I would NOT use it on a camera. It's altogether different stuff than electronic contact cleaner.

the only fault i can find with the g11 is no pause button when in video setting..or is there one i dont know about..?

Almost forgott to mention that this repir procedure is also cure for a white -overexpose pictures. Problem is in a stucked shutter.

It is a VERY FRUSTRATING problem. I had a Canon G11 - lens error, out of guarantee and too expensive to repair. Had to buy [emergency decision, were in Paris and need a camera!] another camera. Unfortunately I made a bad choice - bought the Canon G1X. Although it took stunning pictures for 9 months, last week I got the same "lens error - please restart" message.
Now comes the sad part of it all - after contacting Canon South Africa, I was told that the warranty is not honored in Africa is the camera was bought in Europe !! Can you believe such utter nonsense?
So, the bottom line is - do NOT invest such a lot of money in a Canon. There are better value for money on the market, and probably better service than what Canon offers.

4 month update: My humidity method eventually failed and the wheel did nothing (dead) so I spent a card or two using Aperture Priority mode and adjusting exposure, (using the histogram), with the exposure compensation dial. The............suddenly, for no reason, the wheel is now fully functional.
The saga continues.

My Acer desk top computer running Win Vista Ultimate is losing time, so I guess it is also the internal battery problem?
