Harry Clarke

This group is dedicated to the greatest genius of Irish stained glass and illustration, Harry Clarke 1889-1931.

Clarke's career was brought to an untimely end by his poor health, but in that short time he established a reputation as one of the most talented, successful stained glass artists who ever lived.

His first efforts were very much in the Arts & Crafts tradition of the time, influenced by his father, Joshua Clarke, who himself ran a stained glass workshop, and his experiences with the artists of 'An Tur Gloine', where he learnt much of his craft.

Clarke developed a distinct, personal style in both his glass and illustration that had far more in common with the European Symbolists artists than the Arts & Crafts. His stylised, often elongated figures with their often sharp features and intense expressions characterise his work, along with an unsurpassed richness of colour and technique, utilising much acid etching and plating to magnify the richness of his work.

Clarke was also a renowned illustrator, producing stunningly original images for works such as Goethe's Faust and, most notably, Edgar Allan Poe's 'Tales of Mystery & Imagination'. Some note the similarities with the work of Aubrey Beardsley, but Clarke's work is much sharper with a real flair for detail. It also often betrayed Harry's penchant for darker subject matter, perhaps a kind of antidote fo the wealth of sacred imagery required from him for his church windows.

After Clarke's death in Davos, Switzerland in 1931 his studio continued to run under the name of 'Harry Clarke Studios Ltd' and continued to produce striking stained glass, usually in a style remarkably similar to the master's own, up until their closure in 1973.

For more on Clarke's life and work see below
www.bpib.com/illustrat/clarke.htm

This group exists to draw together images from Clarke's ouevre in stained glass and illustration as a testament to his incredible vision and talent.

Work from the latter years of Harry Clarke Studios (ie after Clarke's death) will also be welcome as they largely continue his vision, provided they are identified as such.

Today I received a press release from the Stained Glass Association of America. There will be a Harry Clarke Tour in the Fall of 2012. It looks like fun. I thought you would be interested in the information (shown below). Laura Goff Parham
Harry Clarke Stained Glass Tour
Ireland’s ‘Strangest Genius’ in Stained Glass
‘A New and Unique way to Experience Ireland’

When you think of Ireland.....what comes to mind............Green landscapes, Guinness, Pubs, Music, Rain or Riverdance....well there is much more! Ireland’s arts and crafts provide a different side of our country!

Enter Culture & Heritage Tours, a unique company that looks at Ireland in a different way. We bring you on journeys in a refreshingly different approach to experiencing the many aspects of Ireland’s past. The idea is simple enough; experts have put together itineraries on a variety of themes which will allow you to experience Ireland in a way not previously possible. A great deal of thought has gone into designing the overall program as well as the individual details of each tour, taking in both the well known, but more importantly the less well known. Ireland is full of hidden gems that are, as they say, “hiding in plain sight,” and it helps to have an expert on hand to help you find them.

Culture and Heritage Tours have designed a truly unique tour based on the life and work of Ireland’s most renowned Stained Glass designer, Harry Clarke. The Harry Clarke Stained Glass tour of Ireland commences on the 10th of September 2012 and for ten days, you will be taken on a journey of exploration throughout hidden Ireland. This trip takes you on a journey starting in Dublin’s National Museum and Hugh Lane Gallery to the Honan Chapel, University College Cork and on to the Diseart Institute, Dingle, Co Kerry into Galway, Tipperary, Donegal and Belfast. There are lectures by experts in Irish Stain Glass and its restoration.

Despite being beset by poor health throughout his short life, Harry Clarke created some of the finest work produced in the medium of stained glass in the twentieth century. He created stained glass windows for church’s and commercial commissions, as well as numerous panels for private patrons. His Geneva Window, now housed in the Wolfsonian Museum Collection, Miami, which was to be a gift of the Irish Government to the new International Labour building in Geneva, is considered a masterpiece, but it was thought to be a little risky in some of its depictions by the great Irish writers who assisted in the planning. There are also the nine chancel windows depicting angels in St. Vincent De Paul Church, Bayonne, New Jersey. His work is now housed in galleries, museums and private collections all over the world.

Designing this itinerary required months of research and this is reflected in the attention to detail throughout. While Harry Clarke is the primary focus, this tour also looks at the influence of other stained glass artists in the arts and crafts movement in Ireland, including Sarah Purser (An Tur Gloine or in English, the Tower of Glass in 1903), Evie Hone and Wilhelmina Geddes. In Ireland, these talented ladies are exemplary in not just their artistic work but are figures linked to the beginning of women’s liberty in a country which was at the time ‘man in business’ orientated.

The Harry Clarke Stained Glass tour of Ireland is evidence of the authenticity that Culture and Heritage Tours embrace in order to offer a product that is unique to them. Regardless of which of the different tours takes your fancy, you can be content in knowing that all tours are artistically tailored so you can “experience, savour and enjoy a rich and rare land and to highlight the forgotten and interesting places in Ireland. What makes Culture & Heritage Tours different is that we have gone out of our way to find “the obscure and relatively undiscovered culture and heritage of Ireland.” We “create tours that speak to your mind and your senses and open up a world of wonder. Not only do the tours take you off the beaten track, they also take you to a cultural world of discovery.” The tours available will appeal to many different interests and age groups and if like many others, the Harry Clarke tour is for you, you will be delighted to hear that there are still spaces available.

Culture and Heritage Tours embrace Ireland’s vivid kaleidoscope of picturesque landscapes, magnificent mountains, incredible travel destinations, unique culture and ancient heritage. Explore Harry Clarke’s world of Stained Glass with Culture and Heritage Tour. It is not surprising that Culture and Heritage Tours is Ireland’s leading specialist tour and travel operator.
