Tokyo Exhibitions

After a year and a half of witnessing the one of the most unorganized, expensive, uncooperative and elitist art scenes in the world whilst simultaneously boasting some of the best artists, greatest galleries and cafes, coolest museums and an ever-proliferating international feel, Tokyo needs, like San Francisco, Berlin, Buenos Aires and many other great cities, a network of both artists and galleries working in cooperation toward the larger goal of bringing art off of its lofty pedestal and into the workshop, le atelier, the taller, the studio, for all to take part in.

So here's your chance: If you know of a gallery, a cafe, a dentist's office, a wall of graffiti, a secret warehouse party, anyplace, party or person which can contribute to increasing the general population's knowledge of how to access good, fun, thought-provoking works of art (whatever your definition), let us know. Post your photos of art, cafes, galleries, graffiti (no tagging please), stencils, stickers, magazines, people, anyone anywhere doing anything noteworthy.

Let's keep it positive and active. It'll benefit us all in the short and long run.
i just want to give a small heads up that a friend of mine is opening up a multi purpose art gallery in january. i want to be up front about this: it is very far away from central tokyo, a 2 minute walk from sunagawa nanaban 砂川七番 station, off of the tama monorail line, which is 7 minutes from tachikawa 立川 station. he wants to use it for painting, sculpture, photography, whatever...

since it's just opening up the rates for shows at the beginning will be very cheap, like basically 1man for a week. (that's as of the time i am writing this now...) if anyone is interested in doing something let me know! email is better than flickrmail, my address is dan at mcvmcv dot net

Transdimensional Jipangu Photography Exhibit at NOS Ebisu

JRaptor posted a new topic:

Dear all,

I hope you will please excuse the intrusion especially considering that I just joined the group, but I wanted to let you know about my latest exhibit entitled, "Transdimensional Jip@ngu: Japan Summarized in 10 Photos By A Permanent Alien" currently being held at NOS in Ebisu through the middle of October. The relevant details are as below:

Transdimensional Jip@ngu: Japan Summarized in 10 Photos By A Permanent Alien

August 26th to mid-October 2009 at NOS Ebisu

Hot off the heels of his acclaimed “Eternal Japan” show and the latest in his Japan series of photographic exhibits, “Transdimensional Jipangu” is photographer Jon’s Sheer’s latest exploration of the relationship between the often seemingly disparate elements that make up the Japan of today as seen through the eyes of a long-term foreign resident in Japan. The images on display have all been created using high dynamic range photography (HDR), a technique that combines multiple exposures of the same subject to produce incredibly high-definition and often surrealistic-looking pictures. To further enhance the presentation they are likewise printed on 5mm-thick acrylic panels ranging up to 1x1.5 meters in size using Taiyo Printing’s Barrier Dot stochastic printing process, which unlike conventional printing techniques eliminates the use of halftones to create highly realistic and almost three-dimensional prints.

Artist Profile
Jon is a 35 year-old American photographer who is a permanent resident of Japan born in New York City and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area but firmly rooted in Tokyo, where he has lived for over 13 years. His main fields of photographic interest include travel/adventure photography, architecture, landscapes, and Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines.
The bulk of Jon’s artistic vision is primarily expressed through HDR, which allows him to fully convey the true depth and feeling of his subject matter in an often hyper-real yet strikingly intimate fashion. His deep understanding of Japanese language and culture combined with his inherently keen Western eye provides him with a unique perspective which he infuses into his syncretic creations that blend East and West and meld the past, present, and future.

A portion of his work is on semi-permanent exhibit exclusively at the Toast Gallery in Paris, France (http://www.toastgallery.com) and was selected to represent Japan in the 2009 edition of the Relais Et Chateaux Asia guidebook, an exclusive collection of images detailing 475 of the finest hotels and gourmet restaurants in 55 countries. He is also a Getty Images Contributor and was chosen as Imagekind's Featured Artist for the month of November, 2008 and will be the Featured Artist in the October issue of Bluecanvas magazine, a publication geared toward professional artists and photographers. He has held several exhibits in Tokyo over the past few years and more are scheduled in 2010.
