Contact Toronto Photography Festival

CONTACT is an annual month-long festival of photography exhibitions and events held throughout the Greater Toronto Area during the month of May.

CONTACT 2010 THEMATIC FOCUS
Pervasive Influence
As technology evolves we witness the transformation of photography alongside the shifting social, political and cultural events of our times. In this era of instant information the image is stimulating sweeping, unprecedented change in the way we communicate.

In 1964 Marshall McLuhan wrote of the photograph as “the brothel without walls”. He described photographs as “dreams that money can buy” which could be “hugged and thumbed more easily than public prostitutes.” If we consider his metaphor within today’s global culture rife with image saturation, is the illusion images create now preferable to reality? Has the authority of the photograph been enhanced over time? Does it command our choices and grow stronger as the technology evolves? Or is photography losing its power to communicate ideas? Is its ability to convey meaning now diluted by the widespread dissemination of images?

CONTACT 2010 will consider the ways in which photography informs and transforms human behavior. The festival will recognize the influence of Marshall McLuhan, on the 30th anniversary year of his death. We will present images that examine connections between mass media, advertising, art and photography. This includes conceptual approaches to photography that utilize the codes of advertising, the language of consumerism, the stylization of marketing campaigns and the force of propaganda. Photojournalism and socially concerned documentary photography will provide a realist-based examination of the emotional and political impact of images and their effect on society and culture. CONTACT 2010 will explore the personal and social consequences of the medium of photography, in a society devoted to the image.

We invite you to post your photos and share your experiences of CONTACT 2010.

Contact 918, now in its second year, creates an international online forum for photographers. Throughout the month of May, a selection of photographs submitted through this website will be showcased as part of a running video projection in the 918 Bathurst Cultural, Arts, Media and Education Centre open to all audiences for the Contact Photography Festival. It emerges as an exciting digital playground that connects photographers and communities by linking the virtual with the physical.

The aim of Contact 918 is to create new communities through the medium of photography using the Internet as a meeting ground. Contact 918 is the culmination of images from an online network of international photographers. This global initiative is an inclusive forum for photographers to become part of a video projection to be broadcast at 918 Bathurst.

THEME: PERVASIVE INFLUENCE
Photographic submissions should reflect this year's thematic focus, Pervasive Influence. Photographers should submit images that will explore the transformation of photography alongside the shifting social, political and cultural events of our times. Contact 918, like the Contact Photography Festival, will feature images that consider the ways in which photography informs and transforms human behavior.

Entries must be submitted anytime before April 30th to ensure that they be submitted for entry for this year's projection screenings at 918 Bathurst. By submitting an entry, each entrant agrees to the Official Rules and warrants that his or her entry complies with all requirements set out in the Official Rules and that the decisions of the Judges are final and binding with respect to all matters related to Contact 918. Please note that entries received after the April 30th deadline will still appear as part of the online network though they may not be considered for event screenings.

The Contact 918 event runs from every Wednesday through Saturday from April 28th to May 29th at 918 Bathurst: Culture, Arts, Media & Education. We are located at 918 Bathurst Street (One block north of Bloor St.)
For chronicling the banal and every day of modern life in a way that is often straight-ahead truthful (and equally banal!), but always cautionary.

Authenticity.
My favorite is Nan Goldin, and though I had seen her work many times in print and online there was something special about seeing it in person. I had an opportunity to see her do a slide show last summer in London at the Tate Modern and it was so real and moving. Especially at the end when they list all the names in memory, and you feel like you knew these people too, and you can feel how loved they were. There is something so human about her documentary work, something that transcends the subject matter and moves into territory that is urgent and essential to everyone. As always it inspires, but more than that it really urges me to be thankful for the people I know, and the time we have together.
