This April is the 100th anniversary of the loss of the RMS “Titanic” along with many of her passengers and crew and as a part of the commemorative events, the heritage steamship “Shieldhall” will be a major participant. As a mark of respect Shieldhall's hull has been repainted in black. It's the first time in the ship’s 57 history that she has worn anything other than grey.

On the 10th April, 100 years after “Titanic” departed from Southampton, “Shieldhall” will be re- tracing some of those steps. An excursion will leave the White Star Dock, now known as the Ocean Terminal and courtesy of Associated British Ports, we will be embarking our passengers at 11:00 at the new Ocean Terminal. The Ocean Terminal will be the focus of a major event starting at 11:30 and the passengers will be able to view these via a giant screen being erected on the quayside.

At midday, the time that “Titanic” started to cast off, the preserved tug tender “Calshot” will sound a recording of “Titanic’s” whistle and all vessels in the port will be invited to respond. The steam whistles on “Shieldhall” will probably be amongst the loudest. Shortly afterwards, the flotilla of craft will depart from the Ocean Dock, with “Shieldhall” amongst the leaders.

Whilst the other vessels re-enact their own parts, “Shieldhall” will be tracing the early stages of “Titanic’s” voyage down Southampton Water and into the Eastern Solent to the Ryde area. At that point, she will make her own private whistle salute and then make her way back to Southampton.

On the 14th April, “Shieldhall” will again put to sea to commemorate the last full day at sea for “Titanic” and they have invited the Mayor of Southampton, as the Admiral of the Port of Southampton to be their guest. They will also have one of the port chaplains, Rev Andrew Huckett from Southampton Seafarers Society and at a point between Ryde and Bembridge, a memorial service will be held on board to remember all those that were lost when “Titanic” sank. It is also a memorial for all those lost at sea in peace and war over the last 100 years.

Both excursions will have two guest speakers who will give presentations relating to aspects of the loss of Titanic. They are also working with our catering staff to create a menu similar to that offered on “Titanic”, but not the first class menu.

Shieldhall's machinery, boilers and Bridge equipment are almost identical, to those on “Titanic” and ships of that era and can give the passengers an opportunity to visualise life aboard ships 100 years previously. The engine-room and Bridge are normally open for visitors during our excursions and the volunteer crew are always happy to answer questions and share experiences.

Whitaker Tankers generously supplied the black paint and Williams Shipping the painting stage and tug, when required.

Shieldhall on the Move - April 2012

The Shieldhall should be moving berth on 4th April at about 1600 hours.
She will come out from the Itchen and around to her old berth 48, in Southampton Water, which will be her berth for the summer season.
She is now painted in Titanic`s colours so if anyone is around on Wednesday afternoon, you might see her moving under her own steam and looking very grand in her new colours.

On the 10th April she will be leaving from the same berth and at the same time as the Titanic sailed. She will also be folowing the exact route down to the IOW.

A number of other vessels will be alongside her too on this occassion.
