Can you spot the sheep in the grass? I love the way the sunlight is striking the land obliquely in rays. Im en-route to Dulverton, there are many miles yet to travel.

The viewpoint is tremendous as i head west from Dunkery Hill eventually meeting up with the Macmillan way west before taking a track down to Exford. It is glorious to see the interplay of sunlight and shadow on the landscape before me for miles on end.

Initially I took this as quite a dark image but have used light painting to bring out the textures in the trackway and the perspective of the grass leading up to Dunkery Beacon. I quite like the effect. Best viewed in LIGHTBOX. Press L.

Looking back at the ridge path leading from Dunkery Hill, the highest point on Exmoor and the county of Somerset. This path leads to some bronze age cairns such as Great Rowbarrow and Little Rowbarrow.

From the cairn that lies atop Dunkery Beacon I look across the Bristol Channel. Dunkery Beacon is the highest point on Exmoor and in Somerset at 519 metres above sea level.

I am climbing up Dunkery Hill to Dunkery Beacon but I have to keep looking back as the views are totally amazing! I love the alternating fields in shadow and sunshine with the clumps of trees. I was almost overwhelmed!

The clean lines , some say spartan, of the backhead and cab of Great Western 2884 Class 2-8-0 3850 as it stood at the head of its train in Minehead station.

3850 is owned by the Dinmore Manor Locomotive Ltd and based on the West Somerset. The following information is from their website www.dinmoremanor.co.uk/index.html .

3850 was one of the last batch of the 2884 class of GWR 2-8-0 heavy freight locomotives, introduced in 1938, which were an later version of the 2800 class originally introduced in 1902 to the design of George Churchward. Built at Swindon on 16 June 1942 it was first allocated to St. Philip's Marsh, Bristol. From there it went to Westbury in March 1947 and onto Severn Tunnel Junction twelve months later. In 1958 3850 was put into store, but returned to service with a move to Aberdare in February 1959 from where it worked until 1963. The locomotive then went to Banbury before being transferred to Oswestry in October 1964 and then to Croes Newydd in January 1965 from where it was withdrawn by British Railways later in the year.

It had the good fortune to be dispatched to Woodham's in Barry and was purchased for preservation in 1984. After many years of dedication it steamed again in February 2006.

Hybrid Great Western Railway 2-6-0 9351 has just arrived at Minehead station with a train from the south.

The design for this locomotive dates from the 1930’s but the Great Western never actually built any engines of this type, opting instead for the 2251 Class of 0-6-0. However in the 1990’s the West Somerset purchased "Large Prairie” number 5193 in unrestored condition and took the decision to create the "engine that never was”.

If the backhead is considered spartan then the rear view from Great Western 2884 Class 2-8-0 3850 is even more uncluttered. This is great for sighting signals, etc on a warm summer's day such as this but mid-winter tender-first running sorts the men from the boys!

Thanks to the driver and fireman I was allowed a quick visit on the footplate before our own train left Minehead. After a short chat and a few photos I cleared off to let the fireman get on with preparing his fire.

The Stream that heads down from Dunkery Hill next to Dunkery Gate and then drops down a rocky gorge. Beautiful beech trees send their branches down to the water. The conditions are just right for creating bubbles.

Another escapee from Woodham's scrapyard in Barry, British Railways Standard 4 tank 2-6-4T 80136 stands out of steam at the north end of Minehead statopn.

Bubble Genesis

A stream cascades down a precipitous gulley but pools just here, the conditions just right for creating bubbles. I almost fell into the water and over the cliff because my rucksack snagged on the low lying branches of the beech tree. This scene was one of the many highlights of this walk.

I could have stayed here all day, from this view you have a landscape full of folds and dips, lovely curves and colours glinting in the sun and to my back are the extensive moors where Red deer roam wild and heather blooms in profusion.

From Wheddon Cross I take minor roads and tracks to Dunkery gate where I will start my ascent of Dunkery Hill, the highest point in Exmoor and Somerset. Its lovely to see the wonderful autumnal colours.
