Dawn Over The Vineyard – (HDR – Blended)

Although the focus the past couple of weeks has been on the sea of peach and cherry blossoms (among others) in the orchards that blanket the area, another very important agricultural product in the Niagara Peninsula is grapes for wine production. Here we see one of the area's many vineyards before Spring leaves have formed, on either the grape vines, or, for that matter, the trees in the background. This vineyard is located in Beamsville (technically the regional town of West Lincoln), Ontario, along the South shore of Lake Ontario. - JW

Tech Details

This image is based on a group of three auto-bracketed images processed using HDR software to produce two different versions (one to emphasise textures – Mantiuk -and the other to emphasise colour - Fattal). This is a blended version of the two and is otherwise a classic HDR image.

Taken using a tripod-mounted Nikon D7100 fitted with a Nikkor 18-105mm VR lense set to 42mm, ISO100, Aperture priority, f/9.0, three auto-bracketed exposures around a nominal 1/8 sec, exposure bias EV-0.33,. HDR processing to make use of the tone-mapping was done using Luminance/Qtpfsgui to produce two different versions, one based on the Fattal model (for colours) and the other on the Mantiuk model (for detail/textures). PP in GIMP: image loaded the two images as layers, Mantiuk on top and Fattal bottom and then blended by setting the opacity od the top/Fattal set to 85% to add some texture from the Mantiuk model layer to the colours of the Fattal layer and then create a new working layer from the visible result, green channel saturation reduced slightly to tone down grass, duplicated the working layer, processed the top layer using the tone curve tool for best sky look disregarding impact on the ground, processed the bottom layer using the tone curve tool for best ground look disregarding impact on the sky, used a large soft-edged eraser to remove the ground portion of the top (sky ) layer to reveal the better ground from the layer below, create a new working layer from the visible result, slight tone curve adjustment to make the tonal range more 'realistic' looking, slight contrast boost, sharpen, add fine black and white frame, added bar and text on left, scaled to 1800 wide for posting.

New Zealand

Suprisingly, on our last trip to New Zealand we hardly saw any autumn colours due to the locations we visited (coast, glaciers). the vines were turning a great shade of gold as we were driving from St Arnaud to Kaikoura though. This warranted a roadside stop ! I've included a larger than usual size version for 'original' given its proportions.
