Today we hit the forest roads and went to the ghost town of Lester, WA. Upon entering the town you are greeted by death's phone building. Which I guess helps age the ghost town because US West was incorporated in 1991 and was rolled into Quest in 2000. I'm not sure if the red was just not painted over the logo or if the logo was painted over the red door. I guess this could be a sign of what will happen to all land lines soon enough.

The Mountain States Telephone & Telegraph Company (Mountain Bell then US West then it was acquired by Qwest) constructed the Telephone Building in 1929. It was designed by William Bowman in the Gothic Revival style in an exuberance of terra cotta detailing.

The Telephone Building is on the National Register #04001555.

Communications Device

It appears to be some sort of communication device, with a tethered mouthpiece and receptacle for inserting monetary funds. My understanding is that the user would activate the device with money, then press the square keys under the mouthpiece to identify the appropriate connection terminating point. Once the connection was achieved, usually with an audible greeting of some sort, the user would then speak into the portion of the mouthpiece closest to the tethered communication cable. Placing mouthpiece in hook above the square buttons would end the connection. I remember seeing these lining the walls outside the office at my high school, near the ashtrays.
