Tiny recently metamorphosed Western toad 'toadlets' migrate across the Kitimat River Salmon Hatchery lands on their way to the banks of the Kitimat River.

Found in our garden, so probably born in the pond. Small enough to fit in a foxglove....

Found this tiny little fella when we (Darach and I) went for a wonderful trek to Loch a'Choire. 30 years ago, I planted many of the trees in that plantation which was bare hill-side until then. I used to swim in the loch when it was hot; a sandy beach heated the water up nicely at the eastern end. I have wanted to see how they were getting on for some time.

The water level seems to have risen since I was there all that time ago but it is still an amazingly beautiful and peaceful place.

We visited a sandstone overhang / cave, on yesterdays walk. It is hidden in the forest and has from time to time been used as a 'residence'. At some stage in the past (The Depression?), it had walls and waterproofing and somebody had excavated a beautiful bath in the sandstone. The bath, near the back of the overhang has water in it and the Toadlet was living in there.

This species is confined to the sandstone of the Sydney basin.

Graham and I found lots of tiny frogs and toads in the undergrowth and this little one, about 2" high posed beautifully for us

We wanted to try feeding this little (30mm) toad a blackfly; the shot of the toad is before the insect was offered, then we got a shot of both but the toad was out of focus. So we added the fly to the toad photo in GIMP .... because there was no chance for a third shot! Glop - and no more fly!!

A small subadult Cane Toad (Bufo marinus) underscores the huge problem that this introduced species has become for Australia. Completely useless as biological control for scarab beetle pests of sugar cane, the Cane Toad has become a plague across Australia. During our two-week stay in Queensland, we saw the large adults every night we went spotlighting, and we encountered still pools teeming with Cane Toad tadpoles. A decent-sized predator in its own right, Cane Toads will eat anything they can fit into their oversized mouths. In addition to consuming Australian wildlife, the Cane Toads also have a deadly toxic poison within the glands found across the dorsal surface. If a predator tries to eat a Cane Toad, the venom kills the predator, making the Cane Toad a deadly introduced species on both sides of the food chain. While this little toadlet may look cute, it is a terrible plague for Australian ecosystems.
