On a cold (!) windy spring day, Eamon was playing outdoors at beach-club "Timboektoe" at Wijk aan Zee. We had just been warming up after a walk on the pier and heard him play and I went out for better sound and a look. It was worth getting cold over again.

I had already taken a few shots and then asked him if he was OK with pictures being taken.

After a few more songs and a lot more shots, I went over between shots as I wanted to buy his album (as in: vinyl, LP!) and asked if it was OK to use the pictures for a photo project. I now realise I did not explain the project (however informal, he had a gig to finish...). We did talk a bit more and with Mrs Snapper joining in (and also being from Canada) we found out a few more details about places they had booth been... he is now based in Toronto but originally from Edmonton, Alberta (but that can be found on wikipedia too).

He explained he was touring and a guy called Jeroen had brought him to play the beach club. I guess it was Jeroen who said "no flash photography" when I aksed for approval to photograph :-)

So today I went on a one-day beginner's photography course. When I booked on a few weeks ago it was mainly in the hope of gaining some basic knowledge and hopefully shortcutting the route towards understanding my camera and photographic technique...

I've concluded though that it's probably best just to get out there and take photos.

When I started I envisaged being mainly interested in night photography and portraiture...turns out that they're the two disciplines I've so far found most difficult...so will try to focus on these areas over the next few weeks.

As always, I'd welcome any tips on the best way to approach portrait photography (your preferred lens for portrait shots, best ways to interact with your subject etc)...I'm in awe of the sheer number of incredible portraits on Flickr, so please feel free to share some of the knowledge!
