Unidentified Lepas sp. - Barnacles on Pumice Stone, Slaughter Bay Beach, Kingston, Norfolk Island

ID assistance to species level appreciated.

Lepas anatifera or Lepas pectinata maybe. Most of the mapped Encyclopaedia of Life records in the region are reduced to just Lepas sp. Lepas pectinata is associated with pumice rafts in the region.

These barnacles have hitchiked a ride on this pumice stone which has washed up on this sheltered beach at Kingston on Norfolk Island. The bay/beach is known as Slaughter Bay. It’s name is not as ominous as it sounds as the word "slaughter" comes from an Old English word meaning "slow-moving water".

There are lots of these barnacles often attached to pumice stones which are plentiful on the beaches of Norfolk Island.

Charleston - James Island: Bowens Island Restaurant

Shucked oyster shells pile up in the Bowens Island Restaurant parking lot.

Bowens Island Restaurant, located at 1870 Bowens Island Road, was founded in 1946 by May and Jimmy Bowen. Perched at the tip of the 13-acre Bowens Island, just minutes from Folly Beach, it reputation was earned for its local oysters and shrimp. After being destroyed a fire in 2006, current owner Robert Barber, the Bowen's grandson and former member of the South Carolina House of Representatives, collaborated with local architect Carl Jones, reopening a new dining area and bar in 2010.

Bowens Island was featured on The Travel Channel's Bizarre Foods America with Andrew Zimmern, Man V. Food and Unique Eats. It has been named as one of America's Great Seafood Dives by Coastal Living and one of the Top 10 Southern Seafood Dives by Southern Living, and is a regular selection on the EATER 18 list.

These great waves were hitting the cliffs nearby and then coming back across the beach and hitting incoming waves with so much noise. I tried to capture the mood and noise with the image without getting my feet wet!
