La programación de tareas o scheduling es un proceso de toma de decisiones con la meta de optimizar uno o más objetivos, que juega un rol importante en la mayoría de sistemas de producción y manufactura. El scheduling tiene que ver fundamentalmente con la asignación de recursos escasos durante el tiempo. Los recursos y tareas en una organización pueden tomar muchas formas. Los recursos pueden ser máquinas en una planta, rutas en un aeropuerto, equipos en una construcción, unidades de procesamiento en un entorno computacional, etc. Las tareas pueden ser operaciones en un proceso de producción, despegues y aterrizajes en un aeropuerto, etapas en un proyecto de construcción, ejecuciones de un programa de computador, entre otros. Cada tarea puede tener un cierto nivel de prioridad, una fecha de inicio más temprana posible y una fecha de entrega. Los objetivos también pueden tomar muchas formas. Un objetivo puede ser la minimización del tiempo de terminación de la última tarea, y otro puede ser la minimización del número de tareas completadas después de sus respectivas fechas de entrega.

Resolver un problema de programación de tareas implica tomar elecciones discretas de tal forma que sea encontrada una solución óptima entre un número de alternativas finito o contablemente infinito. Dichos problemas son llamados problemas de optimización combinatoria. Sin embargo, la literatura permite utilizar técnicas de optimización clásica que aún cuando no son eficientes en problemas de gran escala, sí permiten al decisor una solución para problemas pequeños. La otra dificultad en el scheduling es la diversidad de las restricciones conflictivas dadas por las fechas de entrega, límites de costo, máquinas, características de la orden y otros. Si se consideran tasas de fallas de las máquinas y la incertidumbre del tiempo de procesamiento de los trabajos, resolver este tipo de problema puede volverse imposible. Bajo estas circunstancias, se requieren usualmente técnicas de simulación. Otra técnica a ser usada en la resolución del problema de programación de tareas es el desarrollo de heurísticas o métodos de búsqueda que usan reglas que tienden a dar buenas soluciones tal vez cercanas al óptimo.
