Yesterday while checking the preparations for the Maverick contest down at Pillar Point I photographed this White-tailed Kite swallow a vole whole, see animation below!
I always thought most raptors ate by ripping the prey into small bits. Click on photo to see animation.

Captured this after 5 FULL days of sideways rain which had us shooting waterfalls and other low subjects. The forecast for this day was showing the same 90 percent of rain. It was what I expected for December in the Olympic rain forest so imagine my surprise when the skies were clear when we arrived at the beach. Patience finally paid of in spades!! What a Blessing!

Photographed this Drake Hooded Merganser at Kellogg Bird Sanctuary in Michigan. The pond this guy was in is feed by Wintergreen Lake. Didn't have my shutter speed as high as I'd like as I was using fill flash because it was overcast and there wasn't any wing flap activity (until this shot!) Able to get a pleasing wing blur to convey some motion so I was happy. The green reflection in the pond was some surrounding shrubs that still had green on them and hadn't dropped their leaves yet.

Stumbled upon this Barred Owl while out photographing a waterfall amazingly enough with an out of state friend of mine. Need to give credit to the flock of Eastern Bluebirds that were harassing this young fellow. Without their alarm call, I most likely would have never noticed this guy.
