"It is well to be good to women in the strength of our manhood because we must sit under their
hands at both ends of our lives." ~ He Dog, OGLALA LAKOTA

The women bring us into this life and nurture us as we grow up. When we reach our womanhood, she supports us and sings the songs to help the family grow. The Elders say we must look at the woman in a sacred way. We must realize how special her powers are in bringing forth life. The woman will bring balance to a man. The woman will help him see. It is said, behind every successful man is a supporting woman. Maybe we should examine how we are thinking about women. The Great Spirit says we should honor them. Are we respecting and honoring our women today? Grandmother, Grandfather thank you for our women. Today, let me honor them.
Navajo Woman

This old Navajo woman is approaching her centennial years and has never set foot off the reservation. She lives with her extended family in a small cinder block house in a wide and dusty entrance to an ageless weathered canyon in Monument Valley, Utah. Her name is Susie Yazzie. When the tour trucks arrive with their hordes of camera-laden sight-seers one of her male family members helps her from her home across a barren patch of dirt to an old hogan where she sits behind a hand loom and weaves blankets while the tourists snap pictures and gawk at the authenticity of the surroundings. Her skin is leathered and her body is taut and sharp like an ancient cactus yet her fingers play across the loom as nimble as a concert violinist. It is an act that has numerous daily showings and I noticed that the tip jar was overflowing with bills. I tried to figure in my head what her daily take would be based on standard tour group sizes and quantity per day. It seemed substantial. Later on I chided myself for my thoughts--what a fool I was to question her honest work for her daily bread. She is quite a beautiful woman and I have a lot to learn before I can walk in her footsteps.

Plus, believe it or not she is a movie star.
