This young man was a participant in Mount Rainier National Park's Camping Adventures with My Parents (CAMP) program in early July. I snapped this picture of him looking up at the Mountain as we hiked the Nisqually Vista Trail, which was still almost entirely covered by snow. I'm really pleased with the color, lighting, focus, and framing of this shot.

This image is featured on my photo blog, thelightisall.blogspot.com, on September 5, 2010; was one of two images submitted to the Department of the Interior's "Diversity Days" photo contest in September 2010; was entered into the Washington Trails Association's Northwest Exposure photo contest, in the category of "Offbeat Outdoors," in September 2010; and was entered in the 8th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest in November 2010 in the Travel category. Entered in the Gr8 Photos 2011 contest #2: Your best portrait. Submitted for consideraton in the Getty Portfolio February 2011. Accepted into the Puyallup Fair's Washington State Photographers exhibit at the Western Washington State Fair, 2011! A sunset shot across the meadow at Longmire in Mount Rainier National Park. I took this photo on a quiet April day while working at the Longmire Museum. I don't remember the circumstances for sure, but it was often possible, on a quiet winter day, to sprint across the road and snap a picture of the mountain, even while on duty, if the light looked right!

This photo is featured on my photo blog, thelightisall.blogspot.com, on September 3. Entered in the Lonely Planet Challenge in the category "Purple," March 2011. Winner's Circle contest #854: monochrome.

Taken at the top of Mount Si as we finally came out of the woods into the open area at the top. Tehre were fantastic view not only of Rainier, but of the Olympics, the Cascades and the whole of the Snoqualmie Valley. Even Seattle was visible.

When looking at something this enormous in front of you, I find it really difficult to encapsulate that feeling in a photograph. Of all the shots from this trip, this is the only one that seemed to get close to capturing the sense of scale. At the bottom of the frame you can see my good friend, Jesse, taking a moment away from his own viewfinder to pose for me. :)

As seen from my flight on approach to Seattle Tacoma airport…

I was already impressed by the Rockies in general as we were flying over them, but then I saw this, and my jaw just dropped. This photo really doesn't do it justice with regards to its enormity.

I think this is the clearest view I have ever seen! Flying back to Tucson. This was a great vacation and we were sad when it came to an end.
