Maymont - A Top 10 Public Space

John H Bowman posted a photo:

The American Planning Association's Great Places in America program yesterday recognized Maymont as one of America's 10 Great Public Spaces for 2011. Maymont, a 100-acre park just north of the James River in Richmond, was the Victorian estate of James and Sallie Dooley, who left it to the city of Richmond to be used as a park about 85 years ago; it is now operated for the city by the Maymont Foundation. A number of photos of the beautiful grounds, gardens, animals, barns, and mansion are included in the four sets comprising my Maymont collection. This photo, taken in late afternoon in overcast conditions late last week, shows the waterfall from the Italian Garden down to the Japanese Garden. Best in light box.

After seeing the news of Maymont's recognition by the APA, I decided to post this photo; I have a person coming to do some computer upgrading soon, so I'll make Flickr comments later today. (Update: Getting a 1 TB hard drive and another 2 GB of RAM in the Dell, the computer Ruth Ann wanted to keep after I got the iMac, went smoothly -- but somehow settings for the wireless network got lost, and the technician doing the memory upgrades finally gave up, after a long time trying to get it working again, so I've been off Flickr longer than expected. The Dell is now faster, but doesn't get us to the Internet right now.

Maymont waterfall

Many things draw visitors to Maymont in Richmond, Virginia: the beautiful rolling land, the wonderful old buildings, the many animals, and the lovely gardens. This waterfall originates on the edge of the Italian garden, down the hill a bit from the mansion, and falls to the lower level of the Japanese garden. I'm not very good at estimating heights and don't know the drop of this waterfall; however, the garden structure at the right provides some perspective; it's tall enough for an adult to stand in, so I figure the falls are roughly 30 feet high. When we were there a week ago, the water was not flowing, and today is overcast, so I've turned to this photo from early April of last year. I have never bothered with a tripod at Maymont, so this was hand-held (1/15 sec., f/22, ISO 250). The Maymont set provides information about Maymont, as well as several additional photos.
