Los Carpinteros, Cuban, founded 1991, Free Basket, 2010, concrete, steel, paint, plastic. Commissioned by the Indianapolis Museum of Art, purchased with funds provided by the Griffith Foundation Gift, in memory of Melvin Simon.

Containing soaring blue and red steel arcs, this sculpture makes the apparent the trajectory of a bouncing ball. Free Basket juxtaposes the practical and the imaginary, drawing on the form of an international basketball court, and turning it into an aesthetically surprising sculpture that offers the community a place to play. In developing their project, Los Carpinteros focused on the prominence of basketball in Indiana, bringing together art, culture and sports, and developing an iconic project for the city of Indianapolis.

Formed in 1991, Los Carpinteros is a Havana, Cuba-based art collective comprised of Marco Antonio Castillo Valdés (b. 1971) and Dagoberto Rodríguez Sánchez (b. 1969). Los Carpinteros’s work combines meticulous craftsmanship with shrewd political and social commentary. Recent projects have repurposed objects with violent connotations for use in daily life, such as Panera (Bread Box) (2004), a replica of a missile with side compartments for storing loaves of bread. Their 2000-2001 work Transportable City evokes Cuba’s crumbling infrastructure through abstract portrayals of Havana’s iconic buildings and installations of portable tents. The collective’s work has been featured in solo exhibitions at P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center in New York, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the 9th Havana Biennial, and in group exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Museum of Contemporary Art Sydney.

Over the past four years, Robert Indiana's LOVE sculpture has undergone a major overhaull to secure its structural integrity. With the structural repairs now successfully completed, the IMA is taking the final steps to restore its surface appearance.
Technicians recently used a fine air abrasive system to blast the sculpture's surface in order to remove the original textured, dark purple and rust corrosion, which had been marred as a result of the structural repairs. Over the next few years, the clean, freshly exposed Cor-ten steel will re-weather outside and the smooth steel will transform from silver to a variegated purplish brown patina with iridescent overtones. The first stage of this process may surprise viewers because the sculpture will turn birth orange due to rusting which results from the steel being exposed to repeated wet and dry cycles outdoors. The pace of the change in patina will depend on weather conditions, but eventually the object will turn brown and then continue darkening to its popular, recognizable appearance.
