Gothic Snowtober in Central Park

Today is a snow day in New York City, the first since the Halloween Blizzard of 2011. There has been mostly mild weather since the day of the freak storm. The October snow was a snowfall that New Yorkers enjoyed more than most, especially the children calling out “Trick or Sleet!”

Back in October with the leaves were still on the trees, it was not a good day for the park. Last estimate I heard, over one thousand Central Park trees were downed during “Snowtober.” But the day after the snow the people really enjoyed the change of pace. Children were getting in some early sleigh riding and the park was as crowded as a perfect June day.

I enjoyed an all day walk with my cameras and the photo above was one of my first stops before the snow started melting. Being one of my favorite bridges in Central Park it was also my favorite in the lot.

Did you know that all of the bridges in Central Park are unique and most have names? The three anonymous Calvert Vaux bridges that lead to the reservoir seem to be playing on a common theme. All three are cast iron and while most other bridges in Central Park have names, the reservoir bridges at West 86th Street and East 85th Street went without names for many years. This one that crosses the bridle path at West 94th Street was named by the people. We call it the “The Gothic Bridge.”

Gothic Bridge (94th street)
The beautiful Central Park Gothic Bridge was made of steel and cast iron in 1864, when it was designed by Vaux. This bridge gets its name from the Gothic Cathedral style curves of the ironwork on the spandrels.

Other times I cam barely see.

This is one of my favorite compositions. My favorite bridge in Central Park, well tied for favorite with about nine others. The bridge is framed by my favorite tree, well tied with about one thousand others. I can't count the number of times I've taken this same picture from that same spot, perhaps five hundred on over one hundred visits to the northern view of the Gothic Bridge.

I’m not sure if this bridge shot is particularly appealing to you. I came home and after seeing the view on my computer, the odd color of the light coming through the trees and the shadows of those trees on the old bridal path creating a sort of stage apron, I was pretty thrilled. I had thought I had gotten the best shot of this view so many times before and I had a new favorite view of a familiar sight.

This Picture was not about technical skills or the art of photography. It was all about getting out there and just taking the shot, a game of practice. I have several compositions that I keep going back to through seasonal change and at different times of the day. I remember that Monet painted the same Cathedral over and over. I guess he was also seeking to learn something about light. I don’t expect that I could ever learn a fraction of what Monet learned from his repeated paintings from my repeated photos but this Gothic Bridge is my Cathedral.

Lately it occurs to me. What a long strange trip it's been.

This was a new one. Up around 96th Street just a little South of the tennis courts. Wonderfully serene. There were a lot of joggers and people walking by, how I managed to get a shot with not a soul in it, I don't know. While It was not at all deserted as this photo may suggest, it was incredibly peaceful.

I think I am almost in love with this iron bridge as I am with Gapstow bridge.
