Keeled Skimmer (Orthetrum coerulescens) - Explored

We only have one species of Skimmer in Northern Ireland, for now at least and even then it is very restricted to few locations in the south-east. Black-tailed Skimmer's are just across the border in Co Louth and doing well and may well spread north. These were taken in one of the colonies in Mountains of Mourne. Unfortunately I had very limited time and the weather was very changable. As I was about to give up and leave the sun came out and at least five males appeared as if from no where.

This species is one of acidic areas around slow moving flushes. The bottom image shows the area that these shots were taken.

Stonechat (Mallorca) Explored 20/06/12

Some images of Stonechats taken on holiday last month. No matter where you are these are great little birds. The males on Mallorca, which are of the contiental race, which are darker on the back and head than those I see around here. Also included are few shots of young birds. I have included one from Ballycastle at the bottom for comparison.

Another set from Mallorca. This time a wonderful little finch which was one of the first birds I seen when I arrived in Sa Coma. Every morning at surise the one below sang from the fence at the entrance to Punta de n'amer nature reserve. Most of the time though they were high in the trees and hard to get shots of.

Audouin's Gull (Mallorca)

This is a species I definately haven't seen around Ballycastle. The Audouin's Gull is still considered a threatened species even though the population has increased significantly from an estimate of only 1000 pairs in the world in 1975. The population is now over 20,000 pairs but this is considered unsustainable because it is likely that the fisheries which sustain a large part of this populations are threatened. If the fisheries close it is likely the population of this species may collapse. The birds in Sa Coma though seem to do ok from the scraps from humans on the beach.

Quite a nice bird, for a gull!

Another familiar species on Mallorca were Greenfinches which could be seen feeding on the wildflowers alongside the agricultural areas. In the morning sun they looked stunning.

Just back from a wonderful weeks family holiday in Sa Coma, Mallorca. My wife booked away from the famous nature reserves further north but that didn't prevent me finding some time in the mornings for a bit wildlife photography. Butterflies were quite scarce in the area, unfortunately I didn't see any of the species I'd hoped to get, but may be next time. There haven't been too many of these little beauties at home this year so it was nice to see them.

Expect more Mallorca shots in the coming weeks.

Ringed Plover in flight off Ballycastle Beach. These are my wifes favourite birds because they breed nearby and she loves watching the newly hatched chicks on the beach.

A very rare but welcome visitor to Northern Ireland. Best bird I've seen for a while! Called down today it is still present but didn't come close to shore much.
