The Feast of Our Lady of Candles

In Jaro, Iloilo City, Philippines, the Feast of Our Lady of Candles (Nuestra Senora dela Candelaria) is held every second day of February. It is the most vibrant religious festival in the Western Visayas.

Locals and visitors crowded the Jaro Cathedral to honor Nuestra Senora de la Candelaria (Lady of Candles), the patron saint of Jaro. It made for a very crowded but festive time.

There is a procession of candles followed by locals carrying a huge statue of the Virgin Mary. The highlight of the festival is a parade around the town center lead by the young women of wealthy Jaro families and the fiesta queen and her escort.

I captured this photo of this young lady during the latter part of the procession. I waved at her to catch her attention and she gave me a quick smile before she had to move along with the rest of the procession.

The Children of Guimaras

After a day of touring around the Guimaras Island lead by our extraordinary tour guide, Daisy Yanson from Panay Adventures Tours, I mentioned to her that I wanted to stop at a local market to shop for the famous Guimaras mangoes.

With my nephew, Jeran, riding a top the roof of our private jeepney (he wanted to ride like a local), we pulled over at a local market where there was not only an abundance of fresh produce, but also photo opportunities.

As I wandered around the market these were the first children I encountered. At first they were very camera shy, especially the boy, but after a couple of photos (and focusing issues with my Tamron lens - this happens a lot with Tamron) and showing the results on my camera LCD they became very comfortable. I even managed a smile from the little girl, but it's that stare from the little boy that draws me into this photograph.

Having Fun in Tigbauan!

In the coastal town of Tigbauan lies a beautiful church whose design was inspired by Churrisgueresque architecture, a form of Baroque.

After admiring the inside of the church with its unique mosaics depicting the Stations of the Cross, I stepped outside to photograph the facade. Behind me were children playing and they were intrigued with my digital SLR camera. These girls jokingly asked me if I could take a photo of them so I turned my camera in their direction and took a photo. They were embarrassed and were about to run away when I stopped them and showed them the photo I took of them on my camera LCD. Their eyes grew big and they screamed, "another one!" After a couple of snaps they got comfortable and began have fun in front of the camera and I eventually got a winner!

Children Holding Hands

Village: Admiral
Country: Philippines

These children were making there way down from their home in a village named Admiral. The mission group I was with was holding a distribution and feeding program in the village.

Admiral is located in Antipolo and is considered a slum village. Homes are wood and metal and usually 10x10. Several thousand people live in Admiral, most of them children.

I visit Admiral several times a year documenting mission work and helping with humanitarian relief.
