I had observed this DB class 044 'Jumbo' 2-10-0 heading north through Cochem with a freight for Koblenz yard earlier in the day at 07:40. By 14:35 it had returned south via the Moselle Valley with a balanced working from its home depot at Ehrang. A grubby No.044 331-7 runs into Ehrang yard on Saturday 29th April 1972 at the end of irts day's work.
Class 065

Kingmoor Klickr posted a photo:

I find it a sobering thought that when I took this transparency of 2-8-4 tank No.65 013 at Aschaffenburg shed it was barely 21 years old, but already withdrawn from service. That sounds familiar doesn't it! It is now 41 years to the day that I am uploading this image...The DB Class 65 were newly designed passenger tank locomotives, built for the Deutsche Bundesbahn after the Second World War and were intended for suburban and commuter trains serving German cities, where they were to replace Classes 78 and 93.5. As a result they were allocated to the locomotive depots at Darmstadt, Düsseldorf and Letmathe. Between Düsseldorf and Essen they were even used on early S-Bahn services. And between Limburg/Lahn and Wiesbaden and in the area of Darmstadt they also hauled goods services. Krauss-Maffei initially delivered 13 engines in 1951 and a further 5 from 1955 to 1956. The first of the class, 65 007, was retired as early as 1966.The class 65 proved to be exceptionally reliable engines, but they could not be used universally, because their coal bunkers and water tanks were small. As a result they could only be used for short-range goods traffic. The final members of the class were used on the Ashaffenburg-Miltenberg passenger services alongside class 064 2-6-2 tanks. By the time of my visit to Aschaffenburg depot on 19th May 1972 there was one (065 018-4) serviceable in the shed building and four dumped on the 'scrap line', Nos.065 001, 065 013, 065 014-3 and 065 008.

Aschaffenburg-allocated DB class 064 2-6-2 tank No.064 247-0 whiles away an hour or two at the delightful stone-built sub -shed at Miltenberg on 19th May 1972.
I spent 75 minutes linesiding in the pine forest near Emsbüren on Saturday 5th August 1972 and in that time noted nine loco-hauled workings, of which six were steam-hauled. At 15:30 class 042 2-8-2 No.042 164-4 heads south with a mixed freight for Rheine. The class 042's were affectionately known as 'Ochsenloks', which can be translated as the obvious Ox, or less obvious 'bullhead'.

During my travels around Germany in 1972 my only association with this class of locomotive was at Mayen; the Konz-Karthaus scrapyard and here at Hof depot. This was the only member of the class that I was to see in steam; although it clearly wasn't going far during my vist here on Saturday 3rd June 1972. 086 493-4 was built by Henschel, Kassel in 1942 (works No.26712). As far as I am aware, this 2-6-2 tank was used on an occasional basis to move wagons to and from the goods yard with materials destined for the railway workshops at Hof. There were four other members of the class present here, but no other members of the class were active.

I really could not drag myself away from my memorable weekend at Neuenmarkt Wirsberg and the 'Schiefe Ebene', but it was very warm and the light was extremely harsh and a 300-mile journey was ahead of me after this. So this depature for Hof, at 14:26, had to be my last brief but exciting association with the line, as 001 202-1 gets into her stride for the gruelling climb to Markstschorgast and onward to Hof on Sunday 4th June 1972. By this time one year later I had met my wife to be and this was actually taken on her 18th birthday - a great day indeed!
Mid-Summer Light

I really could not drag myself away from my memorable weekend at Neuenmarkt Wirsberg and the 'Schiefe Ebene', but it was very warm and the light was extremely harsh and a 300-mile journey was ahead of me after this. So this depature for Hof, at 14:26, had to be my last brief but exciting association with the line, as 001 202-1 gets into her stride for the gruelling climb to Markstschorgast and onward to Hof on Sunday 4th June 1972. By this time one year later I had met my wife to be and this was actually taken on her 18th birthday - a great day indeed!

One of my early attempts at trying something a bit different with my railway photography, but I did leave it a bit too late to press the shutter! A shot not to be discarded though given the impressive bridge and railway infrastructure not forgetting the mainline steam of course. DB class 001 Pacific No.001 008-2, the oldest on the books at the time, heads the 08:42 departure from Neuenmarkt Wirsberg away to Hof at the start of the 'Schiefe Ebene' climb on Saturday 3rd June 1972.

Such was the level of activity around Rheine at this time it was difficult to know which way to look. No sooner had I parked my car in the depot car park prior to my visit, this 3-cylinder oil-fired 'Jumbo' 2-10-0 No.043 381-3 rounded the curve at 12:15 passing the shed offices, heading iron-ore for Münster. After taking this transparency there was the small matter of looking around the shed, where 21 of the 35 locomotives present were in steam on Saturday 5th August 1972.

At 12:55 on a hot mid-summer's day there was never going to be any great exhaust display from these efficient locomotives, but documenting a once in a life-time experience was a must. Hof-based Pacific No.001 111-4 heading a 'Schnell Zug' (possibly D853) starts the five mile average 1 in 40 climb to Marktschorgast and onward to Hof on Sunday 4th June 1972. The neatly ballasted track and grass-covered lineside embankments with wild flowers are noteworthy features of an era sadly long past.
