After over a week of trying I was finally able to get a few shots of this dragonfly. They are extremely sensitive to movement and scram at the slightest detection of my presence. Luckily I was able to sneak up on one of them. I'm sure he knew I was there but he was enjoying a rest and didn't care. The third photo below is one that landed on my pant leg. I put my finger in front of him and he climbed on.

The largest and fastest flying dragonfly in North America. It is close to 3" in length. The male is blue and the female green.

A Canada Darner puts the finishing touches to it's moth lunch. I spotted this one along the Tatlock Road while I was on my way to Clayton Ontario.

Last weekend we had a well-needed soaking of rain and in the days afterward our airspace has been astir with hundreds of dragons of different sorts. With patience, a few drop down into the perennial garden for a portrait session.

This male Canada Darner (Aeshna canadensis) actively patrolled a large section of pond, probably on the hunt for mates. He interacted with the Paddle-tailed Darners and Four-Spotted Skimmers in the area, swooping at them in what were apparently territorial challenges. Or, he thought them all to be potential mates.
