Veda Pada Saalai | a mini series

The Vedas are the eternal truths revealed by God to the great ancient Rishis of India. When it is applied to scripture, it signifies a book of knowledge.
People who wish to learn the vedas start as early as 5 to 6 years of age. They join the Veda PadaSala or the Vedic School.
I happened to visit one such school inside the Thiruparankundram Murugan temple. I was awed at the obedience.
I did not get permission and i was asked not to click any pictures. But i have taken some before i was warned ;)

I spent a few days exploring the temples in Madurai and Tiruchirappalli (also known as Trichy). What an awesome experience! Both cities are loud and chaotic places, but in the temples you'll find an oasis of serenity and cheerfullness. Hindu people who come here show a kind of devotion that is quite alien to me, but I did enjoy the atmosphere a lot. You'll find pilgrims, families and surprisingly few western tourists. There are places inside the temples that are off limits for non-hindus, but I could explore large areas (and the temples really are huge).

Most hindus were very welcoming and many thanked me for visiting. Odd, isn't it? I was often asked to take a photo of them, and again they thanked me, if I did so.

In Trichy I was lucky enough to arrive for a 20 day festival, that happens once a year. The Brahmins would carry around statues of hindu gods which are shown to the public only once a year. Many Indians were very eager to catch a glimpse (and take a photo with their cellphone) of these statues. There was a strange, but very enjoyable mix of devotion and cheerfulness in the air. A mix I never experienced in any other religion.

The residents of Kuldhara and the 83 nearby villages abandoned their houses and vanished suddenly one night in 1825, having lived there since the 1300s. Nobody knows where they went and no one has ever been sure.
The story is that the Diwan of Jaisalmer, Salim Singh, is believed to have developed a lecherous eye for the village chief’s daughter who was stunningly beautiful. He was keen on adding the beautiful lady to his harem or else face the threat of unreasonable taxes. With pride and honour overruling all worldly interests, the chiefs of the 84 villages decided to go away in a single night with whatever they could carry with them leaving behind not just their homes but also a curse. That anyone who tried to live in the village would perish.
