Happy Father's Day to all the proud papas out there!

A male lion in Tanzania's Serengeti looks out over the plains with the matriarch lost it an afternoon slumber at his side. A gentle warm breeze softly blows his beautiful mane. He appears lost in thought. And I can't help wondering just what it is that a lion contemplates on beautiful days like today.

Ngorongoro Crater hosts a dense population of lions, in addition to a broad spectrum of African wildlife. In a rare instance, a male lion briefly joins the hunt. When it is clear that this cape buffalo has no intention of going down easily he leaves. He will return when the pride, led mainly by lionesses, has completed the task. It is a disturbing site for many but nature must provide. For every animal that lives in this world hundreds will not survive, but because of nature's efficiency nothing ever goes to waste. Life is recycled. The photo was taken at dawn at the base of the Ngorongoro crater. The caldera walls rise up in the distance beyond.

This young male lion fixes his gaze on a sibling. If the subject of this expression was something other than another lion it would probably soon be lunch. I realize I have seen this look before when I take a gander at my wonderful house cats. All too often I see that look in their eyes when they stare out the window at a bird or squirrel. It's a good reason NOT to let them outside.

A lioness sits out atop a rock outcropping watching over the horizon. From here she can see for miles, looking for prey for a next meal and watching for problems. Lions prefer to hunt during the early morning hours or at dusk. Some even hunt at night.

After a cooling rain and a romp in the mud with the pride two lion cubs settle down to an evening meal with mom. Muddy and tired all the lions lie out on the cool damp earth and catch a snooze. These cubs are now integrated into the pride and will be collectively protected and cared for.

A young male lion stares at me inquisitively while the rest of his pride relax in the lazy morning sun. Once mature male lions will eventually leave their birth pride. They will spend some time out and about, usually in groups with other males before trying to take over a pride of their own. I must admit a certain fascination with cats, big and little!

A young lion sits in the opening created by a rock dome during a rain shower looking lazily over the Serengeti plains. During the heat of the day lions remain relatively dormant, frequently seeking the shelter and view that these outcroppings provide. After the rains when the air is cooler they will frolic in the grass and mud for hours.

A lioness introduces her cubs to the Serengeti plains. They have remained hidden for most of the first several weeks of their lives. Soon she will introduce them to the rest of the pride where most females will pend the rest of their lives. Most males will eventually leave the pride in search of a pride of their own. I envision her telling them, "this land is your land. You will hunt, live, love, and have your own cubs on this land someday. For now you have time to play and much to learn."

One of nature's most efficient predators has a very soft side. When a lioness reconnects with her cubs after hours out hunting the interaction is very much like that of the common house cat. Tenderness abounds. Here a cub is embraced and happy that Mom is home.

In the early morning light in Ngorongoro Crater an older male lion, king of his pride, leaves them to finish off a cape buffalo that they have been stalking. He made a passing attempt but though he is more powerful they are faster and more agile. He will return to claim his meal when the job is done. Taken in Ngorongoro Crater in Tazania.

Lion cubs sit atop a rock waiting for their mother to return from hunting. They can hear her in the distance and as a result have come out from hiding. They scan the landscape to see if they can make her out in the distance. They don't realize that she has already made it to the outcropping but on the opposite side. Cubs are vulnerable at this age and generally learn to stay put until their mother arrives to protect them.
