Something about a wild baboon sitting in a pine tree, eating a mango seemed very out of place to me.

However, on the Zomba Plateau, the British planted extensive pine plantations to develop a paper industry. The indigenous baboons just adapted to a different kind of tree, and still found plenty of the familiar foods, like mangos, in the remaining forest. So for the residents of this mountain, this is not an unusual sight at all.

As I left my first Malawian village, these kids raced along the car to say goodbye. I've had similar farewells since, but none have erased this image from my mind.

Someday, this boy will probably become self-conscious about dirt on his face or missing buttons on his worn, stained clothes. But at this point, while playing with the other kids, he didn't show those things any concerns.

A "catapult" is a slingshot in the Queen's English. This boy keeps his around his neck, ready for action. The bulge of his shirt pocket indicates he is well-stocked with ammunition, too.

This boy was milking a cow into an empty Coke bottle on the shores of Lake Malawi. He seemed surprised that I wanted to take a photo of him something so commonplace.
