Had a fantastic day at the Vasquez Rocks! Who would have thought that around those massive formations that became what they are today 25 MILLION years ago, a TINY little butterfly made the whole day worth it! The San Emigdio Blue Butterfly or Plebejus emigdionis. Considered extremely rare and an endangered species classified as G3 by the NCGR.

Another very rainy day with a break in the weather for a few hours. Brad Wilson and I visited a local state Heritage Preserve in upper Greenville County, South Carolina. This preserve features a seldom seen cataract bog environment. This occurs when debris and soil accumulates at the edge of a stream (cataract) which flows over bare granitic rock. This bog situation hosts many rare plants and is a very fragile habitat.

The main attraction for us was the rare Sarracenia jonesii or Mountain Sweet Pitcher Plants. They were in great shape as were large clumps of Drosera rotundifolia or Round-leaf Sundew. Both of these are carnivorous plants, but they employ very different capture mechanisms.

German Shepherds are a relatively new breed of dog, with their origin dating to 1899. As part of the Herding Group, German Shepherds are working dogs developed originally for herding and guarding sheep. Because of their strength, intelligence and abilities in obedience training they are often employed in police and military roles around the world. German Shepherds currently account for 4.6% of all dogs registered with the American Kennel Club.
