Smith Premier No.2 Typewriter, ca. 1890s
Smith Premier Typewriter Company, Syracuse, New York

The Smith Premier No. 2, introduced in the late 1890s, is a well-engineered, much-imitated typewriter with a full keyboard that separates keys for upper- and lower-case letters and a "blind" under-stroke mechanism that types on the bottom of the platen. Smith Premiers also feature a built-in cleaning brush for the type.

James B. Hammond's typewriter was the first single-element machine on the market that was operated by a keyboard. The machine employs a "type shuttle", a curved strip of hard rubber with the type embossed on its surface that pivots to its appropriate place when a key is pressed. It can easily be replaced, so a single typewriter can use conventional type (large or small), cursive type, non-Roman alphabets, or mathematical symbols. A wide variety of type styles was offered.

Blickensderfer No.5 Typewriter, ca. 1890s
Blickensderfer Typewriter Company, Stamford, Connecticut

Known for its portability, the Blickensderfer No. 5 was designed by George C Blickensderfer. His typewriter contains only 250 parts, compared to the 2,500 parts of a standard typewriter. It has an interchangeable type-wheel and uses a system of inking from a roller. The modified keyboard layout, in which the bottom row of keys contains the most commonly used letters DHIATENSOR, was designed to increase efficiency.
