The ruins of Peveril Castle stand above the village of Castleton in Derbyshire. It bears the name of William Peveril who is thought to be an illegitimate son of William 1st.

The castle fell into disuse after Tudor times and by the 17th century only the Keep was being used as a courthouse, after this was discontinued the castle became a ruin.

A medieval Anglican church dedicated to St Andrew. Inside the church can be found the old village whipping post and stocks. This church is dear to me as my grandmother is buried in the churchyard

Oliver Cromwell's House, Ely

The original structure for this half-timbered building was constructed in the 13th century and portions still survive in the east wing of the current house. At some point in its history the building served as the vicarage for nearby St Mary's church, and later as a public house aptly named 'The Cromwell Arms'. Now it serves as the local Tourist Information Centre as well as a museum! A lot of activity for one place, even more so as it is supposed to be haunted!!!

Oliver Cromwell lived in Ely for 10 years in the mid 17th century

Haverholme Priory

The Gilbertine priory of St Mary was founded in 1139 and dissolved in 1539. The then marshy land at Haverholme was granted to Fountains Abbey in 1137 and construction of the monastic buildings begun. Apparently, when the monks arrived at the site they disliked it, so consequently the monks were granted a new site at Louth Park, while the Haverholme site was granted to the Gilbertines.

The ruins of Haverholme Priory are now a Grade II listed building and also a designated Ancient Monument.

The priory stands on private land with no public access

Located just outside the village of Ashover in North East Derbyshire, England. It is the highest point for some distance standing 299 metres above sea level. Also known as 'The Fabrick' and apparently on certain days of the pagan calendar Morris Dancers gather there!
