This piece of installation art appeared overnight on a wall in Swarthmore's Beardsley Hall a few years ago. Although it was unattributed, it was eventually confirmed that the culprit was sculptor Jake Beckman '04. Beckman also made the giant clock in the Science Center commons, an enormous light switch on the face of McCabe, and the iconic, oversized Adirondack chair on Parrish Beach.

This piece, like many of Beckman's works, is usually seen as humorous. But I took the picture as I passed it and was struck how events like the VT killings and IEDs and car bombings in Iraq can make something whimsical in your midst suddenly seem menacing.

Somebody lined up the chairs on Parrish Beach. Everybody loves pictures of the chairs in unusual configurations. They're kind of the magnetic poetry of Swarthmore's campus.

Freshman Congressman Joe Sestak came to speak to a meeting of the Swarthmore College Democrats while he was back in the district during a Congressional recess.

He spoke for a few minutes, then took questions from the audience for the better part of an hour.

Viburnum x bodnantense ‘Charles Lamont’ is a powerfully fragrant, winter flowering viburnum. The blooms and sweet fragrance enliven many gardens at the end of winter. The deciduous shrub reaches 10 feet by 6 feet. 'Charles Lamont' prefers full sun or partial shade with moist, well-drained soil.

I will personally confirm that the blossoms are incredibly sweet-smelling.

It turns out that the CleanSweep folks got their wish. Neither the Majority Leader or the previous Speaker came out of the session as the new Speaker of the General Assembly. Instead, the dark horse coalition pick was Dennis O'Brien (R., Philadelphia).
