Day 6 - Cindy on Long Island Sound

I tagged along on Victoria's "corporate" retreat out on Long Island this afternoon/evening. It's always so nice to get out of the city and get some nature. We spent a chunk of the evening kayaking and then picnicking on the beach overlooking Long Island Sound. Unfortunately the weather chose to not be particularly cooperative and we wound up hurrying the picnic along a bit to outrun a huge thunderstorm heading our way from the city. (On the plus side, watching the lightning storm approach over the water was really beautiful, in an ominous sort of way.)

Victoria has really fallen in with a wonderful group of people. I can't wait for the museum to open next year. :)

Day 8 - Victoria at Le French Diner

A lazy Sunday morning breakfast in the Lower East Side. Even after a year in the city it still surprises us how different breakfast/brunch is here (as compared to San Diego). In SD, people get up and surf or bike or whatever and then are ready for a big breakfast by 9am. In NYC, people party all night and get up to have a boozy brunch sometime around noon, if that. When we wandered into one of our favorite little hole-in-the-walls this morning, it was about 11:30 and we were the only ones in the place. The owner said, "Oh, I'm glad to see you. Nobody in this neighborhood makes it out for brunch before 1pm."

A different world, for sure.

Day 2 - Stranger #2

I went out hunting for a nicely lit spot tonight and then hung around waiting for someone that seemed like they might be willing to get a shot. This nice tourist was a little confused when she realized I was asking to take her picture instead of the other way around, but she was willing to stand for me. Unfortunately, the pedicab showed up and mucked up the background for the shot.

Lighting here was provided by a big backlit bus-stop ad, which functionally is very much like a softbox, without giving you any color control. Luckily it was mostly emitting green, so correcting it just made the rest of the scene warmer/redder, which worked fine for the neighborhood.

Day 4 - Tati and Mark, East Village

Tonight we had one of the most fun couples shoots that we've done in quite a while. Tati & Mark were really fun and happy, very easy to work with, and very willing to go with our crazy suggestions (like, "How about meeting closer to sunset?") I really love doing couples stuff in the hour right before/after sunset (especially with the low-light handling of the 5dmk2). Especially in an urban setting, the variability in scenes is just huge, coupled with the changing light.
