I have to say, sunsets are harsh. High-contrast yellows, oranges, reds... for someone who tends to shoot natural light in storms or fog, it's not something i'm entirely comfortable shooting or editing. Throw in a raging brush fire? Alright, we'll adapt.

Racing the sun, we parked and sprinted up this rather steep hill with about 30 lbs of equipment. To get everything in focus and to compensate for the incredible amount of light hitting the sensor, i promptly stopped all the way down to F10. An aperture that small blows your depth of field wide open so you're sure to get some detail in both the foreground & background. It also creates a lovely star burst when you're pointed directly at the sun, which Siskel and Ebert give two thumbs up.

Additionally, with most of the light coming from behind the model, I had to use a flash fill to expose her face and the forground. Otherwise, we're just seeing a pretty silhouette.

(Fun Fact: I destroyed a brand new an air mattress and tore a foot long rip in my pant leg in the 15 minutes we were on the hill. The air mattress was used for some earlier falling shots. Did i mention it was raining burning embers?)

In post, it took a while to find the right colors and treatment for this shot. Turns out the trick was to desaturate the colors a bit, compensate for the high-contrast with some milkier tones, and fight the fiery reds with subtle blues and magentas.

these three were taken in sequence while standing neck-deep & fully-clothed in the ocean, with a ziplock bag and some rubberbands over the camera. the waves were making such lovely shapes as the hands of the storm stretched overhead.

really digging how the 50mm 1.2 plays with light when you throw the focus.

reminds me of the old faded postcards you find in shoeboxes at antique stores. planning to revisit this spot for some better clouds.

believe it or not, a lot of the color comes from a blurry long-exposure of our galaxy. can't say how, but it's in there.

here's another from that night. really wanna try out the astrometry group, which apparently automatically scans photos of the stars and tags the interesting bits. let's see how well it does!

you can already see andromeda a ton better here, in the far right.

positioned the moon just out of frame to create a lens flare.

can you spot the andromeda galaxy? hint: it's that tiny yellow smudge in the lower left. that (relatively) small smudge is 2.5 million light years away, which means its light passed through my lens after a 2.5 million year journey. that's right about when we figured out how to use rocks as tools. literally.

taken at 9000ft from the top of mammoth mountain, in the early, early morning of july 4th.

new photo series - trying out a new concept with a photo snapped while climbing a mountain in sedona.

those little specks are our neighboring stars; the one's you'd see looking toward the center of our galaxy. captured them with a 30-second exposure on the salt flats in utah at 4:00 am.

it's interesting how closely our clouds resemble vast dust clouds in space.

this is the second of two, direct into sunlight photos. harsh light is always hard to tame. wish there were more clouds, though i lucked out with the "angel wings" if you look at the satellite view, you can see the exact mound this was taken on. pretty nifty.

amazing what you can capture with no moon and 30 seconds.
taken from the side of the road in utah - around 3:30 in the morning.

i'll be going back in a few weeks for the official photo shoot - as unfortunate as it is, this one is slightly out of focus.

one-third sky, two-thirds earth through a 50mm lens. noticed a pattern i tend to follow wherever i go, so decided to make it official. new series, new set.
