Our house was just yards to the left, on Peel Rd. The space to the right, on Balfour Rd, used to be a big church but was raized to the ground by Luftwaffe bombing during the 1941 May Blitz. 20 years or so later when I got married and left home, this was still a bomb site - where we'd played as kids. Flying debris (from here & elswhere) took away half our roof and for years we only had tarpaulian to protect us from the elements. It was many, many years before all bomb sites were eventually cleared and all war damaged homes repaired; such was the extent of devastation in Bootle. (This is an early/mid 1950s shot, btw)

Our house in Peel Rd, Bootle was just 30/40 yards to the right. Flying debris helped destroy a lot of our roof. (See next pic) This damage shown, was caused by a 'small' bomb dropped by the Luftwaffe during the 1941 May Blitz. All that remained of old mate Phil Brown's house in Salisbury Rd, Bootle (just 50/60 yards or so away from our house), after a direct hit in the May Blitz of 1941. He & his family survived, as they'd gone to a different air raid shelter that day/night. ** If anyone claims copyright and objects to my use of these old photos please inform me.*

May Blitz 1941 : This is all that remained of Liverpool city centre all around the Victoria Monument @ Derby Square. Amazing how this huge monument escaped the German Luftwaffe's best efforts, ain't it? * If anyone claims copyright and objects to my use of these old photos please inform me.*

The men @ left stand in front of house of boyhood mate, Tony Kerr. It's in Southey St, Bootle, and forward left of men can be seen rubble of flattened house next door. How lucky his family were, eh?
