Just about everyone who has been to Big Sur has a photo of the Bixby Bridge. Before the bridge was built and opened in 1932 the trek down Hwy 1 required more than a dozen miles of inland driving down the unpaved and often impassable Old Coast Road. Here you see the bridge in moonlight.

The Bixby Bridge is featured in many commercials because the setting is so awesome. I've featured the bridge before, see below.

I did alter this in a way I'll bet nobody will notice (besides healing out some telephone wires, that is). Jupiter was in the shot, but it had an awful purple chromatic aberration so I cloned it out using a bright star.
Hatteras Lighthouse Moonrise [5_065475]

One of my "hobbies" is calculating where to stand to catch the moon rising or setting behind familiar landmarks. Tall landmarks make the task simpler - most of the time, that is.

This one was on a whim when I noticed the weather was going to be cooperative and I happened to be visiting family on the East Coast.

My thanks to the rangers who not only tolerated my presence, but encouraged it. It proved very tricky trying to find a place where the thicket of swamp and vegetation didn't obscure this lighthouse while facing in the right direction. There are two other light houses on the Outer Banks that make easier targets... but its all in the challenge.

Hatteras Lighthouse

Steven Christenson posted a video:

A six frame animation capturing the rotating beacon of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse one of the most famous lighthouses on the East Coast (of the Outer Banks of North Carolina). This lighthouse is on National Park land: the Cape Hatteras National Seashore.

It is famous in part because it was moved with great effort from its risky location nearer to the ocean to its present location. The lighthouse was was built in 1802 and stands 208 feet tall making it the tallest brick lighthouse in the world.

It's pretty awesome to stand at the base of this behemoth in the moonlight. It is possible (during visitors hours) to climb the 257 steps to the top. As it was, there were many more visitors in the cold windy location when I was there, including a photographer from Western North Carolina, and several couples taking moonlight strolls.

All I was trying to do with this photo is capture the twin beams of light that radiate from the lighthouse. I used 5000 ISO and 1 second exposures. While I could have taken a longer timelapse (and not have the clouds keep backing up), I just wanted to prove to myself it was possible to capture the moving light just as I've captured the 24 beams of light that eminate from the Pigeon Point Lighthouse. The difference, of course, is that the Pigeon Point lighthouse was stationary at the time.
Brilliant Meteor Leaves a Trail

Steven Christenson posted a video:

Last night (ok, early in the morning) on October 20th I left my camera and Polarie running while I dozed in the car. Looking through the frames I found a peculiar "squiggle" which I feared was flare or gunk on my sensor.

As I went back more frames I discovered it was A METEOR! This meteor left a persistent trail in the atmosphere that lingered for over 13 minutes.

Meteor appears in the frame at 5:51 AM, PDT and the trail is still visible at 6:04:12 AM.

Each frame was shot at 20 seconds, ISO 2000, f/2.8, 22mm on a Canon 5D Mark II with a Canon 16-35 f/2.8 L lens. The sky was tracked with a Polarie device I recently purchased.

NOTES: The bright "star" in the upper right is the planet Jupiter and Orion's Belt is in the lower right.. See the image below to locate these and the constellation Gemini. Oh, and that's part of Taurus to the right of Jupiter.

I'm NOT certain that this is an Orionid! The trail seems to start right at the radiant point but if you look carefully, the streak clearly extends past it. I'm not sure how "point like" the radiant should be, however. It's possibly an Arietid (from the constellation Aries).
Crawling Chaos [I_1058]

Steven Christenson posted a photo:

Met this (large) fellow as he crawled across the road while I was on the way down from Mission Peak. Its body is almost 3 inches long.

People below have identified it as a Jerusalem Cricket (which is not a true cricket). Apparently they can create a painful bite and emit a foul smell. But it seemed to ignore me even though my iPhone was literally 2 inches above it to take the photo.

Photo by iPhone, so not the best clarity.

This could also be titled "Home by Another Way" since I elected to head back to the trailhead via a section of the YSC trail. I had to cut short my summit attempt because of severe blistering on my heels (due to the wrong footwear). Photo was taken with my iPhone 4.

I guess you could argue that my gamble to use sneakers instead of hiking boots turned my gambol into painful shuffling of the feet.
Lost in Yosemite [C_033706] Runner Up - Astronomy Photographer of the Year, 2012

NOTE: If you'd like to purchase this image, I've set up a website: ordering.starcircleacademy.com

I hope there is a happy ending to this story. What you see are two hikers standing on the far shore of the Merced river just beyond the end of the bridge that crosses above Nevada Fall. It's a man and his niece. The photo was taken at 11:05 pm, July 24, 2011.

5 of us were undertaking a night hike to Half Dome. We found this pair at the John Muir/Mist Trail junction near Nevada Fall. They were cold and tired. The man was carrying a single dim penlight flashlight. And he asked us how far it was to the valley floor.

Taking a look at their footwear - the man wore sneakers, the woman had hiking shoes - I told them their options were the rough, wet, steep Mist Trail at 2.5 miles or the longer, less difficult John Muir Trail for about 4.0 miles. They seemed to balk at hearing either figure.

That's when we learned that they had started hiking at 3:00 PM from the Toulomne Meadows trail on a whim and "just kept on going". It's not clear they had a plan. It is 21 miles from Toulomne to Happy Isle at the valley floor. Though the trail is mostly downhill, it is a LONG way to go. They had no map and they had just the one dim penlight flashlight - no backup.

I asked them if they had food and water - they said they were fine. Since they were both dressed in shorts, I asked them if they had any additional clothing for warmth - they said they had sweatshirts. I asked them if they had additional batteries (he did) or a second flashlight (they didn't). I gave them my LED keychain flashlight. In about 2 and a half hours the moon would give some additional light, but hopefully they would be down by then.

When the man asked me about directions on the John Muir trail, I told him I hadn't been down it in a long while, but I believed there was only one right turn at an intersection and that would take them below the Vernal Fall.

I was trying to dissuade them from taking the Mist Trail. We had just come up over that path and I knew that they'd get soaked AND there were several footing problems along the trail as well as some turns that are easy to miss in the dark - I know because we had missed them on the way up!

I offered that we were headed on our way to the Nevada Fall to take some photos (a half truth) and that they could come along with us to the bridge. At the precipice of Nevada fall the rushing water at our feet created cold, damp wind. The pair crossed the bridge and stood for a long time on the far side while we set up and took photos of the scene. The fall was roaring in what would have otherwise been a still, peaceful starry scene. The pair stood for so long I wondered what was going on. Eventually they continued onward down the trail... only to turn around and head back mere minutes later. Apparently they were spooked by a large buck on the trail that wouldn't move. We had come across a small buck on the Mist Trail on our way up.

Crossing back over the bridge meant they must take the Mist Trail. I offered to escort them back to where we had at first encountered them. I left my companions behind so they coud do more shooting. From the fall edge there is a wide open scramble across flat granite. In the daytime it can be difficult to find your way, but finding the trail at night led me down a few momentary wrong turns. At last we arrived after two tenths of a mile back at the trail head and I asked them again if they needed anything. They said no, thanked me for the flashlight and started down what I know is gnarly footing and arduous going. I struggled with myself over what the best course of action was. Perhaps I had made a mistake and should have just called off our Half Dome hike and escorted them down. On the other hand, they at least had some supplies and had already managed 19 miles on their own and appeared to be in good shape despite obvious fear and worry on the face of the young woman.

After the hikers had disappeared down the path I waited for my companions to return. Eventually I saw flashlights and headlamps headed my way. Then I noticed the lights veering off in the wrong direction at a point where the trail should come straight toward me.... so I left my pack on the bench and ran to them. I managed to corral my group and we got back on the right path headed onward and upward.

It worries me that the wayward pair may have run into similar trouble with no one there to set them back on the path. I just hope they made it without injury and will be much better prepared next time.

Meanwhile: Please PREPARE well before you do any wilderness hiking. And I pray this pair made it back safely.

For more information, see my Blog.

A few weeks out of the year the setting sun is in the correct position to shine directly through this portal in a large rock formation at Pfeiffer Beach in Big Sur, California. It has become very popular with photographers - but not many are brave enough (foolish enough?) to climb the tall cliffs behind the formation to see this marvelous sight. The opportunity occurs when the sun approaches it's southern most point for the year and the weather also cooperates.

In the large image a serendipitous lens flare lies right over the opening of the Pfeiffer Portal. It was NOT surprising to find 25 photographers here (18 visible in this picture)... it's a popular place. So I went for a different shot. I considered NOT exhibiting this image since I'm sure someone will copy it. There are safe ways to get to this location - but starting from the beach is NOT one of them. Please don't try that!

Also serendipitously, the red in the cliffs in front of me really lit up in the setting sun. I didn't crank up the saturation - it just worked out this way. Now that I've been back I understand how the illuminated rusty orange cliffs became so intensely colored. The glowing cliff is not lit by direct sunlight - you are seeing the shadowed side - but by sunlight reflected from the portion of the cliff below where this image is. Take yellow/orange light from the setting sun bounce it off a rusty colored cliff and illuminate another rust looking surface and that is what you get.

Looks much better larger. You might also want a closer look at the Solar Keyhole or a close up shot of the enormous rock. Heck, you might also be interested in seeing one of the three star trails: west view, low west view, or view to the south from this location on the same night. Or maybe just a single night shot or a shot with this rock and the moon.

By the way, I completely forgot to photograph the purple sand that can be found here. Yep, purple! You can see it in the bottom foreground behind all of the onlookers.

07/20/2010: This image was short listed by the Royal Observatory for the Astronomy Photographer of the Year. Crossing my fingers, hoping to win!

About this image: This is an HDR image - that is, it is a composite of 3 separate photos taken at different settings. One specifically for the sky/sun. One for the middle ground, and one for the foreground. The range of f/stops was about 7. Images were combined in Photoshop using HDR Techniques described in The Photoshop Darkroom book by Harold Davis

Every tourist taking night photos has a shot like this. Even natives take this shot which can be found near Pier 14 on the Embarcadero. The full moon does give it that extra twist, though. Here the spikes (diffraction spikes) are due to stopping down the lens to f/13. No filter is needed to produce the spikes either on the moon or all of the lights on the Bay Bridge.

Oh, and there is no need to light the pilings either... nearby streetlights do that.

If you're curious about the ambitious plans for lighting this bridge, take a look here.

Bonus point and kudos to whomever can identify the direction in which this photo was taken.

Some of the light on this magnificent Cape Hatteras lighthouse is from another photographer who was light painting. Not sure why since the moon was quite full.

By the way this is the tallest brick lighthouse in the world and it is pretty awesome to stand at the base of it peering up. Not to mention the fairly awesome paint job. I'm thinking I should have shot from the opposite side so that the stars and stripes would go in the same direction.
Goodbye Mr. Moon [5_065871]

Steven Christenson posted a photo:

As I was driving down to capture moonrise behind the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, I noticed that the Bodie Lighthouse on Pea Island is located on the sound (not the ocean side) of the Outer Banks making it possible to catch the moon setting near the Bodie lighthouse. In fact, it's a much better target for reasons I'll be describing in my "Catching the Moon" Webinar. (The next webinar is January 9th, 2013, deadline for registration is January 7th).

Many people see an orange or yellow or pink moon in a shot and assume it's the sun, but, of course it's not. The moon undergoes a transformation as it sinks into the atmosphere much like the sun does. Here my effort was to expose properly for the lighthouse which allowed the moons features to become lost. I thought the game was up when the moon hit the clouds, but in fact, it came out the bottom before disappearing into the horizon.

In this single exposure you can see how the soon-to-rise sun pink coloration flavored the horizontal white bands of this impressive light house. Fortunately I made it to the light house in the wee hours in time to get almost an hours worth of star trails.

The Bodie Lighthouse on Pea Island, Outer Banks, North Carolina is bathed in moonlight. It was my good luck that a recent rain left a puddle to reflect some of the keepers quarters and fence. This is a 56 exposure stacked spanning about 40 minutes. The shots were taken well before dawn. In fact, about 12 hours earlier I caught the moon rising behind the Hatteras lighthouse and an hour later I caught the full moon setting behind this, the Bodie lighthouse.

Gaylord Resort and Convention center in National Harbor near Washington, DC is festive for the holidays. There are massive ice sculptures, and of course a Christmas Tree the size of a Winnebago x 2. It was all impressively lit at night. The interior was quite warm, but I was spending most of my time in the chilly outdoor air so didn't relish having my lens or sensor become a dew collector and remained outside.

If you catch someone spraying or writing graffiti, please snap a picture and send it to me. Here are 18 people (or so) who will be unhappy to know about such vandalism since they invested much of their day getting rid of the spray paint, marker and trash destroying this otherwise scenic and lovely park in the East Bay.

Unlike my normal restrictions, you are free to use these photos if you are included in them or were a member of the volunteer crew.

THANK YOU!
