Salt River Mountains

BCooner posted a photo:

I see this view of the Salt River mountains every morning as I leave our neighborhood for work. Though they appear as one continuous ridge, there are actually two distinct mountains (they overlap in the center of the frame). South Mountain is to the left, with Alta Ridge rising in front of it on the right.

They lie about twenty miles away from this spot, and are usually not nearly so clearly seen from the West Valley. But I took this on a Sunday afternoon after the breezes on a windy Saturday had blown away a great deal of the pollution that usually clouds the valley.

The beautiful green field still seeing agricultural use in the foreground is a steadily vanishing sight in this part of the valley. It will probably share the fate of the field across the parkway where houses now stand. I guess I'll just have to enjoy seeing the island of verdant calm in a sea of pavement while I can.

Valley of the Sun

Another picture from atop South Mountain, looking north. The mountains running across the valley are known as The Phoenix Mountains. There is a considerable amount of development on the other side of them as well. Camelback is center right in this photo. The sharp peak just to the left of center is generally known as Squaw Peak, though it has been renamed in recent years to Piestewa Peak, in honor of a fallen war hero.
