Pretty Please

Being at school during most of the daylight hours limits my ability to get out and shoot and so I was thinking about not posting on Flickr for awhile but during the course of my archive diving, some for school and some for pleasure, I have discovered that my choices are changing. In school we are being taught to pay attention to our dreams and incorporate them into the way that we see and I am seeing differently. Not sure how it is working but it is. Anyway, there are photos that I meant to take but when home and looking at them on the computer I began to second guess myself and thought that they were failures. My eyes are beginning to see my initial intent and the ways that it was successful - not perfect because they can always be better. So, I'm not going to quit Flickr yet, because the diving is changing the way I see.

Hope everyone has a great day. Below I have posted my assignment for today - an interesting exercise.

Explored

"I experience a period of frightening clarity in those moments when nature is so beautiful. I am no longer sure of myself, and the paintings appear as in a dream."
Vincent Van Gogh

I meant to post another photo this morning but this is the one that tugged at my heart strings as a moment of reflection, perhaps indecision - like is that lady going to feed me or am I going to have to eat that camera... This photo has not been cropped, nor vignetted, the fox was sitting behind a snow bank, up on a hill.

One of my current assignments, aside from keeping a journal, is to do a self-portrait that is beyond just a photo but a collage of who I am. I told a friend about this and she thought mine might turn out something similar to Van Gogh. Hmm, well, I'm not planning on cutting my ear off or shooting myself but I do feel deeply, as it appears that he did - it is part of who I am and it seems to cause me to work harder at understanding people and nature. I don't take good photos when not feeling emotionally involved/invested in the subject, even if on the most basic of levels for a short period of time. All of my life I have wanted to be a part of something but have consistently found myself on the outside looking in, but connecting photographically with a subject puts me inside for that brief second.

I want to apologize in advance that it isn't going to be possible for me to do as much commenting as in the past. Yesterday I spent my morning catching up on comments and was late to school - and didn't get my work done. I want something out of this educational experience that can't be described, it only tugs at my being, and the only way to achieve that is to keep my focus on creating the best work possible. Luckily that involves continuing to take photos and to do video. I will keep posting everyday and will do more faving, just so you know that I'm still here and looking at your great photos. And, I have Apple TV now and so can view the photos that are faved over my TV screen, while listening to NPR and podcasts, which is part of my curriculum. By the way, your photos look great when viewed on my HDTV. So, if you are going to get upset at me for not leaving as many comments then please don't leave one for me. This is a necessary move on my part.

Happy Wednesday to everyone.

Explored

Personally I think that this Red Fox beauty should be the mascot of the volcanic, glacial mountain...wonder if national parks have mascots?

Two nights before seeing this beauty there was a black and silver red fox nearby and though I was thrilled there was still some grumbling in my head about why they were never red - well, during this trip I saw two of them, or the same one on different days and very far apart. When I drove down the mountain late Saturday afternoon it was snowing heavily and more than six inches had accumulated on my car. Along the way was this fox covered in snow and the red against the fresh white was a sight that made me stop breathing for a second.

All packed, finally, and the mover friends will be here soon. I'll be back online tomorrow night. Wish me luck in getting all done before the next snowstorm hits this afternoon.
Note added 8/28/2011 I am truly flattered that so many have enjoyed this image enough to share it with their friends through blog posts and such. However, I long ago changed my setting to forbid blogging of my photos but have not enforced this. I continue to find this photo on blogs and have not been flattered by some of the posts and the names of the blogs and have been uncomfortable with my name being associated with them. Because of this abuse I have been forced to repost this image with watermarks. The reposting will delete the posts on the different blogs and any future use will not be an unmarked copy of the photo. Please contact me at my email address if you would like to license the photo or purchase a high resolution print. Thank you and I apologize for the inconvenience.

Hi everyone, just returned from my fourth trip to Mt. Rainier this year and must say that I feel truly blessed to have had so many wonderful adventures on that mountain in the past five months. My time there is never long enough but I assure you that during each moment I am uttering many a thank you. And a big thank you to VisitRainier for having me up again and to the National Park Inn at Longmire for their most excellent hospitality and food. And to the wonderful people I met during my stay. Great conversations, crackling fires, Santa train ride, snowshoeing and playing in the snow. The weather wasn't terribly cooperative but that didn't seem to matter to all of the people who drove up to the mountain to enjoy the snow, they just kept coming. Things were a little sketchy when I left with warm weather, snow melt and a lot of rain, causing the Nisqually River to rise quite a bit - I'm keeping everyone up there, in Ashford and surrounding communities, in my thoughts and hope that it passes soon.

Now, to the fox. I've done a lot of complaining that every red fox I'd seen was black and gray so this was my first red beauty. I lost track of how many foxes I saw on this trip but sure never grew bored with them.

Hope you like him as much as I do.

Thank you,
Hi everyone, just returned from my fourth trip to Mt.

Thank you,
Deby

Reason number 1 not to feed the foxes

This beautiful fox was sitting in the middle of the road on a snowy day near Paradise, hoping that someone would feed it. Rangers have told me that the number one reason not to feed these guys is because they have grown up associating cars with food and many of them get run over. How would you feel if you killed this beauty? I'd feel awful. It is a tough one because they are not shy about asking. Since this photo illustrates the problem so well, I decided to share it. See this one's cute face close-up in the comment section.

Red Fox at Paradise on Mt. Rainier

Deby Dixon posted a photo:

“Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away”

Anyone who has followed my photography over the years knows that Mt. Rainier NP is my special place. The national park that gave me the unquenchable thirst to discover and photograph other national parks. Mt. Rainier has taken my breath away over and over again and continues to do so when I look at some of the photographs that I have taken. I crave the feeling of breathlessness and wonder that occurs every time I see a new place for the first time and for the last time.

One of the things that I do not admit to much, or write about often, is that I retired from law enforcement at the age of 35 because of an injury that was caused during the line of duty. Having worked on the mean streets of a major city with high crime rates, I know too well how quickly life can change and how rapidly everything that a person once knew can be gone. Many, many years later I still have trouble adapting to those changes and to the PTSD that I suffered from, and which is much better today. And so, to hear that a female law enforcement officer was killed on my favorite mountain by a veteran who was suffering from PTSD, hits home. I am tired, though, of hearing about the gunman and am craving to know who Ranger Margaret Anderson was. Some friends of mine were in the Paradise parking lot at the time of the shooting, a very short distance away, and they spent 14 hours locked in the visitor's center while officers searched for the gunman. I know that they consider this ranger a hero. Who knows what would have happened if he had made it to the visitor's center... I urge everyone to take PTSD seriously and to take a moment to reflect on the way that law enforcement officers risk their lives for your safety.

As for the camp host that was mentioned in my last post, I failed to mention my reply. I told him: "If you are a pervert you should know that those women who are traveling alone are tough and so you had better be careful about messing with them." I was, of course, looking him straight in the eye, confusing him with stone cold anger in my eyes and a dimpled smile on my lips...

Many of my Rainier photos can be found on the VisitRainier.com website and their Facebook page: www.facebook.com/VisitRainier.

Foxy Lady

Another one of those photos that I've held back on. This was actually the first red fox, that was red, that I'd ever seen (different than the others, or at least different day and location) and I remember being so excited - smiling from ear to ear and nervous about missing the shot. The conditions were difficult because it was a gray, foggy morning and I had to work fast with the exposure (notice the motion blur on the legs) but the result was good. I enjoy this one because the fox is in its natural environment of the forest.

Hope everyone has a great Sunday! The sun is finally shining here and the wind has died down.

Explored

After that little hold-up/snarly action the fox went up on a snow bank, over my head, and behind a mound of snow and just sat. This was all that I could see of him. As you can see, he is sitting there and looking like a sweet and innocent fox that would never snarl at anyone. Close by a couple of Ravens have added themselves to the mix and are making quite the fuss and the fox doesn't really seem to care for them very much. Pretty Dr. Jeckyl and Mr. Hyde sort of show this one put on and a good reminder that wild animals are true to their nature and cannot be trusted.

I have some major changes coming up and my help seems to have disappeared so will be rather distracted for the next several days before things settle down I begin to have more time.

Explored

The truth is that I was so caught up in trying to capture images of this particular fox that it wasn't until looking at the photos that I saw that there was some aggressive behavior going on. Up at Mt. Rainier there are signs everywhere telling people to not feed the wildlife and after talking to the rangers can see why this is such a concern. The ranger told me that many of the kits are hit by cars because they think that the road is the place for food. He said that trying to be kind by feeding the animals is actually killing them. Anyway, I wasn't sure that any of these shots would get posted but several people have asked me to put them up, as well as shots of some of the other foxes that I ran across. There is one that is completely red and very beautiful so you will definitely see some of that one. Learning about animal behavior is going to be a lifelong school.

Beware of viewing large, you will feel like it is going to jump right out at you.
