The Summer Storm: Woodland, California

Ivan Sohrakoff posted a photo:

If I could think of a single image to describe where I live, this would be it. I took this image in early June of 2010, when some outright demonic clouds were passing overhead. The young tomato plants and cultivated earth provided an orderly foreground and what's left of the mighty valley oaks dotted the horizon. I was thoroughly enjoying the sunset colors picked up by only certain clouds.

There is something nice about summer storms... the warmth, the colors, and that scent of a recent rainfall. It is moments like this that I wait for all summer long. Most of our summertime skies are clear, and the air hot and dry... perfect for fields of tomatoes, walnuts, almonds, and a multitude of other crops grown here in California's Central Valley.
Almost Abstract: Palouse Hills, Washington

Ivan Sohrakoff posted a photo:

Details in the LARGE format version.

Rarely do I shoot an image at 375mm, or over 100mm for that matter. Composing a landscape at that focal length is just something I'm not good at, and have very little experience doing. Fortunately, the morning light on the Palouse Hills allowed me to experiment a little, and I came away with a few images at longer focal lengths that are encouraging. Of course, this area is encouraging on its own, so I'm not taking credit for anything here!

The amount of land the farmers in this area cultivate is mind boggling. The hills go on and on, and the farmers go right with them, only leaving the steepest parts untouched. This area makes the Central Valley of California look small!

I am interested in doing some more minimalistic shots, but for the time being, this is about as minimal as I can muster. If you look at this image in large format, you can see all the detailed lines and patterns left by farm equipment.
