The beach at Horseshoe Bay, north of St. Ignace. This beach was all sand when we first discovered the bay, but the tall grasses are winning....

Miles away across the Mackinac Straits, from our hotel room in Saint Ignace. Not bad for a handheld photo using a long lens. While the St. Ignace Holiday Inn Express is not a great shipwatching location, we saw a half-dozen or so ships passing by Mackinac Island during our stay last weekend.

That bumper in the foreground is one of four at the boundary of the Saint Ignace harbor. A sign in town tells that they were an anchorage for tankers delivering jet fuel for Kincheloe (originally Kinross) Air Force Base (now Chippewa County International Airport). Iven Kincheloe, the first man to fly an aircraft above 100,000 feet, was one of my childhood heroes, a test pilot and fighter ace raised in Southwest Michigan. Like many of the Edwards AFB test pilots, he died far too young, in his case doing an early test of the F-104 Starfighter. I was nine when he died, and mourned him for years. Still do, actually.

The Mallard was just resting on this rock when the Tern came along and pushed him off.

Tern rested a couple seconds, then was off again on his perpetual quest for fishes....

Not many navigation aids are named after ships, but Wawatam Light sits at the end of the dock which was long used by the Mackinac Straits carferry Chief Wawatam. This light marks the entrance to the Saint Ignace marina.

It's a new light. Wawatam Light was originally built as a decoration for the Monroe Welcome Center on I-75. When the Center was rebuilt in 2004, arrangements were made to move this structure to Saint Ignace, where (as you can see) it now decorates the waterfront (and, not incidentally, anchors the waterfront boardwalk).

Mackinac Island in the background, where to all appearances folks have been building new "cottages."
