Ensley mixer

Dystopos posted a photo:

View of the abandoned Ensley works near Birmingham, Alabama. The equipment in the foreground is a 600-ton hot metal mixer. When in use it was sheltered under a broad roof and encircled by a pouring platform about 55 feet above the floor. Molten iron from Ensley's six blast furnaces was conveyed to the mixer by overhead cranes in 70-ton ladles. The mixer was basically just a large container in which the output of the furnaces could be blended so that the finished product was more uniform. The molten metal was kept heated by burning by-product gas from coke ovens in nearby Fairfield.

I've loved this site since the first time I saw one of Jet Lowe's photos from the HAER on display at the Library. I finally found an excuse to trespass while I was in college working on some projects dealing with Birmingham's industrial history and the incorporation of ruins into a working landscape. Anyway, this mixer just seems so ominous and alien sitting out there abandoned.
