Cindy Wants To Know If Squirrel Can Come Out And Play

Cindy's a big marshmallow. She would really really really like to make friends with that squirrel, but he is being very uncooperative.

Cindy is very laid back and friendly. Some moronic jackass clipped her ears off, but she's got nothing but sweetness to give the world back. I wonder if her previous owner would look better with his ears trimmed off...it's not like he needs em.

Cindy is waiting for her home at Austin Pets Alive, 1156 W Cesar Chavez St, right between Austin High and Lamar Blvd just off ladybird Lake.

Even though they take good care of him at the shelter, there just aren't enough opportunities for stick chewing, so Odie had some catching up to do.

Odie's got a lot of young energy for zoomies, but also really likes to smoosh right up contentedly in a safe lap or hug for scritches.

He's waiting patiently for his forever home at Austin Pets Alive, 1156 W Cesar Chavez St, right between Austin High and Lamar.

Looking SE from near the lake outlet above the Golden Staircase. The trail runs close by the shore along the first half of Lower Palisade Lake before moving upslope/inland as it runs past Upper Palisade Lake just around the slope to right, and on up to Mather Pass...also hidden from view around the corner to the right 4 miles from here.

Trout Lunch at Lower Palisade Lake - JMT Hike 2012

Looking back W to the lake outlet from near the SE end of the lake down at great little spot on the shoreline way down below the trail. Some fishing, a mouth watering lunch, and a little nap in the grass made for an excellent mid day break.
I thought these were Brook Trout...but after looking at reference, now I'm thinking the front one at least might be Rainbow, even though it doesn't look exactly like most Rainbow I see? Anyone?
You can see from the images below of them in my mug/cook pot that they're pretty small. Delicious though. A little bit of denatured alcohol in the pop can stove cooking for about 10 min w/ a little salt in the mug covered w/ foil, and just a teeny bit of water to get a balance of moist w/ a touch of crispiness...yum yum. It would take several more that size to make a decent full meal, but I'm too lazy. It takes a fair amount of fiddling around since I was just casting a hand line fly w/out rod.
I only made the effort 3 times to fish on this hike, (once unsuccessfully), so the $120 for a non resident Cal fishing license wasn't really worth it for me.

The Golden Staircase - JMT Hike 2012

Looking WSW back down Palisade Creek towards LeConte Canyon from the top of the Golden Staircase switchbacks a half mile short of Palisade Lakes.
This was the last section of the JMT completed...in 1938...and required extensive blasting to forge the trail up the steep slopes/cliffs from LeConte Canyon up to the Pallisade Lakes. Once completed, the route allowed the JMT to run more directly past Pallisade Lakes and over Mather Pass as opposed to the initial route along the Middle Fork of the Kings River to the SW.

It's important never to leave your pack unattended in the wilderness. One reason for this is that bears or other smaller critters will take every opportunity to grab anything that smells even faintly edible... but the main reason is because the marmots love to take pictures of themselves if they get their hands on a camera. I found this shot on my camera after descending from Muir Pass.

Looking NW to Wanda Lake 2 miles down. The famous Muir Hut on Muir Pass, built in 1930. In the late 1800's, early 1900's, John Muir was the most prolific advocate of wilderness preservation in the west...most famously in regard to Yosemite and the Sierra Nevadas where the John Muir Trail now runs.

Evolution Lake Pirates - JMT Hike 2012

The National Park service has a strict policy regarding pirates. What with all the budget cuts, more have been slipping through, but...pending results of a lawsuit filed by the PAA (Pirates Assoc of America), restrictions will be reworded to allow pirates, though still exclude any piratish activity, including but not limited to, burying treasure, firing pistol muskets, making people walk the plank, or drinking rum and singing pirate songs after 10 oclock in the evenings.

Panoramic view looking from the South / upper end of the lake at left, to the North / lower outlet end of the lake at right from atop the dome penninsula between upper and lower. The outlet / waterfall is at right center where the water reaches farthest towards the horizon. Beyond that is Evolution Valley. The JMT comes up from the valley just on the other side of the white rock peninsula to the right, where there are numerous camping spots, (above trail to right). The trail is visible proceeding North along the lake edge at far right, wrapping behind camera and continuing from the opposite side of the photo.
