Big Sur Sunset

Big Sur Sunset
Last week I promised I would reveal the photo today that I took during the video above, and here it is.

I guess you can get the sense from that video how windy it was! What a crazy day... I spent all afternoon and evening getting ready for this. There was a decent amount of hiking, preparation, and walking-around to figure out the best place to stand.

Maybe the bad thing about that video is showing how easy it all appears to be... in future videos, you may see some more of the problems that I face and how I deal with them. In some ways, I think that is more real than something that appears to fairy-book perfect!
The Soft Hills on the way to Paradise, New Zealand

Just beyond Glenorchy, which is just a shade beyond Queenstown, lies a little place called Paradise. The road gets tinier and tinier as you get closer. A few miles before the road becomes all dirt, I pulled over to these soft rolling hills. They were covered with little sheep families, walking to and fro.

One the rare occasion when I am in the field with students, I have them notice a bunch of things. I've touched on this before, and this is another good example. It has to do with the location of the sunlight. There are three elements that can be lit here - the hills and/or the mountains and/or the clouds. Every combination looks dramatically different in the final shot. When you are there on the scene, the light changes so gradually, you don't notice. So you have to teach yourself to be mindful of the untimely flow of light.
The Golden Gate Bridge at Dusk

Stuck in Customs posted a photo:

Daily Photo - The Golden Gate Bridge at Dusk
I had spent the previous night up in Napa, visiting my mom and grandmother. This was a long day with a stop in Petaluma to see Leo's operation, a fast hike through the Muir Woods, and then a visit to the Golden Gate Bridge to catch its majesty at sunset.

I'm sure locals know this spot very well, but I found it thanks to Google Earth. I knew it would be a cool spot, but driving to these spots is always a bit sketchy when you have never been there before. It appeared to be a simple jog off Highway 1, and it actually was. It's nice when something that looks easy ends up actually being easy! This isn't usually the case. Even better, the wind wasn't howling a mile a minute, which I think can happen around here if you don't watch out!

After I took this, I could hardly wait to get back home to process the final image. I don't know about y'all, but I find the post-processing just as fun as the actual shooting... I really get a kick out of it!

New Free Video Coming Soon
Tonight I edited together another video about how I took a photo in New Zealand. I'll get it uploaded soon to share with everyone! In the meantime, you can check out others in the Video section of the website.
The Azure Blue Indoor Pool at Hearst Castle

See you all today at the Google HQ!
I'm excited to meet a lot of my Google friends in person! The talk is today, and I've got everything ready for it. For reference, here are a few links I will mention during the talk:

HDR Tutorial - Free tutorial here on the site - you'll be up and running with a pretty pic in an hour!
Jill Bolte Taylor - about the Right and Left Brain on TED
HDR Spotting - a site with the Attention Distribution Engine to drive more traffic to other HDR Artists sites (still in beta - you have to get an invite code from existing member)
Textures Tutorial - The textures and a video showing how I got those textured-photos
Videos - A collection of free videos showing how I take HDR Photos in the field...
Twitter and Human Evolution - A longer treatise on what it suggests...

Daily Photo - The Azure Blue Indoor Pool at Hearst Castle

I mentioned yesterday that I was able to get a private tour throughout Hearst. It was a long and great day! Thank goodness I had a mass of memory cards... I got so much footage it was crazy!

I could have picked a bunch of shots to be the "first", but I thought this one was particularly wonderful. There are two enormous pools at Hearst Castle, and this is the indoor one. This is a nice vantage point because this spot is actually quite difficult to reach! There is no door behind me... so I had to "shimmy" along that edge you see... It was NARROW... the shimmy was like a video game, except while holding a $10,000 camera! Sketchy! But I just had to get over here because I could visualize the shot before it happened...

Here's a cool fact about this pool. Part of Hearst has now been gutted so there is room for the IT department. The IT department uses the water from this pool to cool their equipment... wild, eh?

The IT department uses the water from this pool to cool their equipment... wild, eh?

It was a cool night... much cooler than the 100 degree heat here in Austin this week! I stopped to take this picture on the way back to my hotel for the evening... people coming and going down by the pier.
