Hong Kong from the peak on a summer's night

Stuck in Customs posted a photo:

If you want to see how I made this (and how you can too!), visit my HDR Tutorial. I hope it gives you some new tricks!

I had a long day waking up at 5 AM to take a series of subways and trains up to Shenzen for some meetings. I had a Chinese VISA, which you don't need to get into Hong Kong, but I had to use to cross the official Chinese border after getting off the train. I didn't realize that it was a one-time use VISA, and I had to go to Shanghai the next day. This caused a lot of problems with the Chinese officials, a body of government with which I do not enjoy causing problems.

Anyway, after I got back to Hong Kong after a day in Shenzen, I was hot and sweaty and in the sort of meeting clothes that aren't great for being hot and sweaty in. But, everything about Hong Kong was still awesome and I had too look hard for things to complain about. The sun was setting, and I made it up to The Peak just in time for a shot.

This was a 5-exposure HDR shot at 100 ISO, and, of course, a sturdy tripod to get all the lights as steady as possible.
La Basilique du Sacre Coeur de Montmartre

This is a famous basilica in Paris. It sits high on a hill and is beautifully lit in the evening. This is the birthplace of the Jesuits back in 1534. That is only interesting to me because I was a Jesuit student myself back in the day. You would think that would mean that I would be allowed to come inside to take all the photos I want with a special key that everyone gets upon graduation. But I had no such key so I was forced to stay on the perimeter with all the other heathens.

This is Secret.

I found her walking with her hooded ilk around the back streets of Mumbai. Usually when I see a cadre of the enshrouded, they are accompanied by Muslim man that is glaring at almost everyone. This time there seemed to be no alpha around, so I asked her for her name. She looked at me and smiled (I think) and then looked furtively around to see if anyone was watching. I got the distinct impression that since I was a white oddity that actually spoke to her that she wanted to talk, but then thought better of it and made a slight bow before gliding away.

Farewell India - The Taj Mahal

If you want to see how I made this photo, you can visit the HDR Tutorial. It may show you some new tricks!

India is a beautiful and magical place. I wish I could say my journey to get to this exact vantage point was the just as beautiful and magical, but it was not.

I really wanted a unique vantage point, and I was reticent to try to set up inside the complex with the teaming crowds. So, I talked my driver into taking me to the backside of the Taj Mahal because I had seen a river back there on Google Maps. We started circumnavigating the place and we came to the old trestle bridge. It was quite a long stretch to get across the river. The bridge was just barely standing, and everything about the dilapidated structure was sketchy. We were the only car on it, and it was hard to get around all the ox-carts, donkeys, and bicycles.

Looking out the window at the rusting girders, I asked our driver, “When was this built?”

He wobbled his head and said, “Eighty-three.”

Well, I thought for a moment. That doesn’t sound so old.

Then he turned back to me, “Eighteen Eighty-three.”

Alone at the Taj

Stuck in Customs posted a photo:

This was a very nice and scary-mysterious man. When he looked at me he twisted his head around like a puppy trying to cast an ancient spell on me. No puppy has ever done that to me, so you can imagine my confusion.

We sat around and watched the sunset at the Taj together and I asked if I could take his picture. After I while I rubbed my House-like stubble since it has been a few days since I shaved. I asked him if he liked my beard. He gave a grunt in response that was either a laugh or a grunt of general disgust at the state of my beard.

I usually don't use my flash, but this case called for a bit of fill light. I aimed my SB-800 straight into the air and used the white card off the top to reflect, while setting the EV to -2/3, so as to not over-power his face. As for the other settings, the exposure bias was -2 EV, shutter speed 1/125, focal length at 31mm, and the ap at f/4. The background is HDR, as are his robes. As with many of my photos, that does not mean those bits are 100% HDR! These are probably on the scale of 10-25% HDR in this case.
So much of my work is landscape and architecture-related. So I rarely use the flash in those conditions. I think using natural light is the way to go, and, as you know by now, with HDR, you can eek out every little morsel of light that is bouncing around the scene. However, I still carry my flash almost everywhere because I do very much enjoy taking photos of people.
Stuck in India - Humayun's Tomb

This is a picture of the Tomb of Humayun in Delhi. I arrived during Diwali, the biggest annual festival that involves a burning a lot of things. Most of the tombs, mausoleums, temples, and the like were surprisingly empty, giving me clean access to cool places like this without dopey tourists getting in the way of sweet photography.

It is the next morning now and the air in Delhi is covered with the smoke from last night's festivities... There is this acrid smell of stale carbon and it's not exactly like a trip to Sedona. Luckily, I am getting out of the city today because my hosts have been kind enough to give me a ride up to Agra to visit the fort and Taj Mahal... more pictures coming soon, so stay tuned! :)
The Calm After the Storm

A few days ago I posted a picture of the storm at the airport here in Palm Beach. I was contemplating flying into the heart of the storm instead of sitting in a room full of attorneys for the day. Today I chose the latter and it was about as much fun as it sounds. It was my first time through this particular experience and it wasn't what I would call a rockin' good time. I wish I could have said, "Your honor, the witness (me) is being badgered" but there was no judge, just a bunch of lawyers quoting rules and regulations I've never heard of. I think, technically, lawyers have formed a sovereign nation who have created a set of rules that abstract them and all behavior from regular society. That's another pseudo-sociological concept I am working on, but is a rather empty thing to really think about unless you are on a break in one of those badgering-sessions.

After the session, I headed out to get some pictures around Palm Beach. I twisted my ankle in an effort to get this one... that dock is even more uneven than it looks!

If you want to see how I made this (and how you can too!), visit my HDR Tutorial. I hope it gives you some new tricks!

After the carpet bombing from the American and the British in 1945, the city of Dresden was left in ruins. in the past 60 years, the city has been meticulously rebuilt to its former glory.

I took the train from Leipzig to Dresden to explore. I don't know if I am lame for going to bed early then waking up at 6 AM to catch an early train to a city to explore, but that's okay with me. Just me and my ipod and my camera...

I've been completely blown away by Dresden. It was recommended to me by a few friends and after spending the day there, I have to say that it compares closely to some of my best photography days around Italy or France. The Baroque architecture is stunning and it is completely unique and charming.

I'm off to Ukraine next... Aeroflot here I come. I hope the mechanic does not come down the aisle again making a collection to buy a part for the plane. That never inspires confidence.

Grooming and Bugs

I found this male and female doing a bit of grooming just outside of the jungles of Cambodia. I've taken photos of a lot of monkeys. They are all over SE Asia and India, so I always pay special attention to them. I suppose that, as a Westerner, I'm just used to seeing monkeys in zoos. So whenever I see them running all over creation, it always makes me laugh. I chase 'em around and take photos like a nut. These two, however, I snuck up on. It's not easy to sneak up on a monkey, mind you. But these two were really into each other. I did a low approach like a Navy SEAL to get as close as I could. The female noticed me at the last second, and I grabbed this shot before they started to run away.

This was shot at 70mm, which was maximum zoom for my 28-70mm lens. The f-stop was at 2.8, which allows me as much light as possible in a tight focus plane. I kept the ISO at 100 for a clean shot with no noise. There was enough light for a quick shutter speed of 1/250.
After the crowds of Angkor Wat, it was nice to go find a remote temple in the jungle and be alone. This temple laid under the jungle, completely undiscovered for centuries.
The hallway and mysterious chambers seemed to go on forever.
Heart of Satan - What it looks like when fireworks explode inside of a storm cloud over a river

This is not like me! I normally never publish a second photo from a very similar location that is also close in subject matter to the first. This one is taken from the same vantage point as the other fireworks shot here in Austin. Ever since I took that first shot, I've returned to this location to see if something else amazing will happen.

On this particular night, there was one of those looming thunderstorms, when the clouds are alarmingly low to the ground and black/green in color. They launched the fireworks from the same spot as usual, but they would actually explode inside the cloud. The lower half would burst downward, carrying a trail of fire behind it. The scene reminded me of a giant electric jellyfish of sorts.

The main shot from which this was taken was shot at 17mm (although later cropped), f/5.3, ISO 100, and -1 EV. The exposure was 2 seconds.

This is from www.stuckincustoms.com - I have a tutorial people keep asking me about at stuckincustoms.com/?p=548

I went out to my secret spot to get fireworks shots (that is not all that secret), but they did not shoot off because of all the high water and floods. But, there was still a great sunset... so I snapped this one.

I'm off to Shanghai - fresh shots soon! :)

We drove down to the south of Yellowstone near Jackson Hole to explore the Grand Tetons. Just as I was taking this picture, a huge bison came up behind me and caught me unawares... and I barely got the fifth exposure to this HDR! It's amazing how big those things are and they are still quiet.
Magnetic Anomaly in Yellowstone on the Solstice

Stuck in Customs posted a photo:

I didn't change the colors here!!!! Let's get that right out of the way. :)

I came to visit a friend in Yellowstone National Park over the weekend and for a few days next week. He has a beautiful ranch on the edge of the park in Montana and is inviting up a fairly eclectic group of intellectuals, mostly associated around various Libertarian think-tanks with which I am involved. I know it all sounds a bit heady, but it's one of my fun academic cerebral diversions. There are daily and nightly TED-like talks from plant biologists, entrepreneurs, geneticists, paleontologists, artists, and yours truly (who is giving a possibly-in-comparison presentation on humans evolving into a super-organism via online games and social networks).

The picture here was taken on the summer solstice in thin-crusted geothermal hotbed of the Norris Geysers. This particular place was not too far from something called the "whirlygig" (or somesuch).

The various colors are made from two merging rivers, each one with a dramatically different temperature. Different color bacteria live in each temperature of water - the red bacteria was over 160 degrees and the green was below 160. If anyone else was there during this same time, they can confirm the quirky nature of these dual rivers running in the same channel! :)
