2nd place, Birds in Portrait, 2009 Atlanta Audubon Society Photo Contest

I'm pleased that an 8x10 version of this photo won Honorable Mention last night (21 Jul 2009) at the Roswell Photographic Society's Wildlife review, digital projected images category.

I am thrilled that David chose this as picture of the day in Bratanesque. Please check out this thread of jaw-droppingly superb photographs. I am honored to have this photo among them.

This captive Red-shouldered hawk resides at the Chattahoochee Nature Center and is part of their educational program. It cannot be released into the wild because it has a deformed beak that makes it unable to feed itself. You don't have to be a kid to be thrilled to be so close to such a beautiful creature.

This Great-horned owl is one of the raptors at the Chattahoochee Nature Center that is used for educational purposes. Because it came to the CNC without a left eye, it cannot be released into the wild. Such close encounters with these magnificent birds are always thrilling experiences, for adults and especially for children.

I am honored that this photo is on the home page of the Wildlife Gardeners forum.

I wasn't going to post today, but since Jude posted her shot of the turkey vulture she met on the path, I thought this was a good time to show you the black vulture I was just about face to face with in January at the Chattahoochee Nature Center. Apparently several of these birds fly in to hang out near the enclosure where captive black vultures are kept. They walk around or perch on the wooden fence, hoping for handouts.

This is one foot of aptly-named Slasher, the Zoo Atlanta Komodo dragon. In the wild, these animals lurk, awaiting prey, which they capture by pouncing on them with these fearsome claws and their teeth. If the prey should happen to escape, it won't go far, as the dragon's saliva contains often deadly bacteria. Komodo dragons are endangered due to human encroachment on their habitat and competition from them for food. Here is more information.

That I got an acceptable picture at all of this cute little critter is a miracle, since he was jumping and swinging and frolicking all over the place along his "vines." He's looking up here at an adult with whom he was playing.

Taken at the zoo with sugarbearsteve. Here's his version--and his confession about switching my camera's resolution. Aha!

Here's some information about the bird.

There was a period at the zoo when my camera switched itself (I sure didn't!--heh heh) to low resolution, and these shots are the product of that. Sorry. I'm not sure which I prefer. Do you like #1 (this) or #2 (below)?

Taken at Zoo Atlanta. The bright sunlight was a challenge, but I underexposed the images and think they're presentable. I like the animal's ear tufts.

I was pleased in October 2009 to donate this photo to the We Are Amazon Foundation for use in a gift card collection they are producing to benefit Amazonia, "the lungs of the world."

I was also pleased to permit use of this photo in the January 2011 issue of Schildkröten im Fokus, in its article "Illegaler Handel und Verzehr von geschutzten Schildkroten im peruanischen amazonasgebiet" ("Trafficking and consumption of protected turtles in the Peruvian Amazon").

Zoo Atlanta's website doesn't have information about this critter, but the Bristol Zoo does.

I got up early to post this before going to the dentist for oral surgery this morning. I hope to be able to visit later. I've got some catching up to do. But if I can't, I know you'll understand.

sugarbearsteve* and I had a fun trip to the zoo yesterday, though the lighting presented a challenge. Many times we had to find ways not to shoot into the sun, sometimes with better success than others.

It’s called a red-bellied woodpecker because its belly has a tinge of reddishness. It can’t be called a red-headed woodpecker, because there’s already a bird called that.

I'm coming to the end of my zoo shots, so be patient. Despite its name waterbuck, this species is less dependent on water than others of its genus, which is a good thing because there was no (or little) water that I could detect in its enclosure. The most conspicuous feature of this antelope is a large white 'halo' or beige ring which surrounds the base of the tail on the rump. You can see that field mark on this photo. Here's more information about waterbucks.

These are far from superior shots today, but sugarbearsteve and I wanted to share with you our photos of this tender scene, with papa gently hugging the baby. He didn't try to lift it or pat it, just wrapped his big hand around its back. Moments later, mama decided to play with papa, and they were cavorting like little kids, themselves, until papa finally had enough and went to sit regally, alone, away from his family (see below). Please stay tuned tomorrow for some better gorilla pix.
