The Gaithersburg, MD MARC station. The station was originally built as the Gaithersburg B & O Railroad Station and Freight Shed in 1884, for the Metropolitan Branch of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (B&O).

It’s cold and windy on a winter evening high about the confluence of the Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers. Just before dipping below the horizon, the sun pops out from behind the clouds and shines a heavenly spotlight on the tunnel portal in Harper’s Ferry, WV.

Amtrak Train # 29, “The Capitol Limited” is on-time (5:15 PM EST) as it crosses the Shenandoah River in Harper’s Ferry, WV. The train is slowing as Harper’s Ferry is a scheduled station stop. “The Capitol Limited” is scheduled to arrive in Chicago at 8:45 AM tomorrow morning.

Two SD70M engines are on the rear of NS 44T as it moves a grain train to its destination in Liville, VA. The SD 70's were on the point until the train reached Harrisonburg where the train was turned on the wye.

NS 44T arrives at the VA Poultry Growers Cooperative grain unloading facility in Linville, VA. Dash 9 #9646 and SD60 #6674 lead the train. These engines were the helpers for most of the trip until the train was turned on the wye in Harrisonburg.

The CPL’s are aglow at Buck Lodge on CSX’s Metropolitan Sub. These B&O era signals will very soon be replaced with newer Safetran signals, which can be seen in the background turned away from the tracks.

A unique feature of the fairly rural Boyds, MD MARC station is this pedestrian underpass built in 1931. This of course was B&O territory long before MARC came into existence.

In Boyds, MD, another CSX intermodal (with a HCLX leaser as the second engine) is headed westbound on CSX’s Metropolitan Sub. Note the small memorial to an unknown person in the bottom of the picture.
