Greater kudu antelope at Fossil Rim Wildlife Center. Consider the scale: His nose is about 6 feet off the ground.

He didn't like us being there. After making the shot, I decided I didn't either.
Shot data: Nikon 5700 at near "normal" lensing.

Close-up of zebra at Fossil Rim Wildlife Center and preserve near Glen Rose, Texas. Hand-held shot with Canon F-1n with 80-200FD lens; exposure was probably f/4 around 1/125. Fuji 100 slide film, hi-res scan by service bureau (yes, I can be old school).

Zebra had just taken the bribe.
(It helps to have a bag of their favorite food treats available from the Fossil Rim Wildlife Center entrance facility.)

This "snapshot" photo won a first place AND best of show ribbons - beating out my week-long setup of the Threat and Desire - Calico Cat and Goldfish watching the fish.

...Sometimes it's just better to be lucky than smart.

Horrible time of day - but the pastels of the mountains couldn't be ignored. This is on the east side of the park, on the road to Rio Grande Village, near the Hot Springs turnoff.

Shiprock Simile

One of a series in my "anti-tourist" photographs, it also illustrates photographic simile in a cynical sort of way.

Think about it.

The lighting in this shot is very bizarre - but totally, completely and 100% as I found it. We were driving into Monument Valley from the south and small thunderstorms were erupting sporadically - simultaneously blocking and revealing the light. As I parked the car to make the photo - the rock formation about 3 miles to the north suddenly went dark. I picked up the rock in my hand on a whim and - with apologies to Kenneth Josephson - shot this moment of truth.

A Fallow Deer - one outstanding in his field. (Sorry, couldn't resist) -

EXIF data: Shot with Nikon E5700 at 8.9mm (widest angle); exposure was f/3.5, ISO 200@1/115th. Modest Photoshop has been used to clean up color balance and add just a touch of foreground to allow the feet to clear the edge of the frame. Earlier data about the F-1n was an error, assumed from a similar shot.
