The Hunter's Moon

The Hunter's Moon is so named because plenty of moonlight is ideal for hunters shooting migrating birds in Northern Europe. The name is also said to have been used by Native Americans as they tracked and killed their prey by autumn moonlight, stockpiling food for the winter ahead. The Hunter's Moon and Harvest Moon are not brighter, smaller or yellower than during other times of the year, but all full moons have their own special characteristics, based primarily on the whereabouts of the ecliptic in the sky at the time of year that they are visible. The full moons of September, October and November, as seen from the northern hemisphere—which correspond to the full moons of March, April and May as seen from the southern hemisphere—are well known in the folklore of the sky.
Richmond Deer 068

Chris Stickley posted a photo:

My first attempt at photographing Deer took place over a year ago. It was a resounding failure.... Travelling for over 2 hours before dawn and returning with only a handful of out of focus shots.
However at the beginning of September Dad suggested that we take the short journey to Richmond Park to have another go. Due to a new baby arriving and work commitments we would miss the Rut. No matter we planned to visit early on the 14th of November. After looking at the weather forecast in the middle of last week we pulled the trip forward to today.
Not such an early start this time, we hit the road at 6am so as to arrive before sunrise. We arrived at the park on time only to find all the gates locked. The park was locked as the Cull was taking place, opening to the public at 7.30. We hung around a while until the gates were unlocked.
We head of into the park, it was not long before we stumbled on a herd of Red Deer. We were unable to get close enough to make any good shots. Although both of us had far better kit this time, I feared we were on a hiding to nothing again. The range of my 200mm was just not going to be enough.
A bit later we found another herd, I managed a few OK ish shots and some good video. The deer letting us move slowly to with about 50ft. Our time with this herd came to an abrupt end as an out of control dog gave chase.
Never mind, I had a few good ones. Time to head back to the car. Then Dad spots another herd. This time we were able to get much closer. Maybe a little too close. These are the resulting images.
Had a really great morning.

Richmond Deer 088

4min video of some Richmond Deer.

I went for a walk with the hounds in Black Park this morning. I had been keeping my eye on the weather forecast the night before. So I know there was going to be some fog. I was hoping the fog together with some early morning sun may make for some interesting shot through the pine forest. As sunrise approached the fog overhead turned a beautiful lilac colour. I was mounting my camera on its tripod thinking to myself I'm going to come away with some cracking shots. But it was not to be, the colours disappeared before I could get the lens cap off and the park was returned to gray soup.
