The chair was there when Simon Corble viewed the site months earlier and was in the exact same position when we arrived to rehearse into the space. Simon commanded that no one should move it, not even one inch - it had been waiting for us. It became Macbeth's "throne". It would be great to credit the artists who decorated the wall for us....but it was "found art".

Young Seward is carried off at the end of the play to a solemn chant. Macbeth, 1993 and the first public performance, on the site of the old ST. Clement's Church in Chorlton, Manchester. A run for the actors to have their first taste of an audience and also to experience the whole play themselves for the only time - so much of their normal evening will involve running across country to find the next scene / prop / costume.

Taken in daylight (obviously) but during performance this was in pitch darkness, lit from below where the audience sat...Directed by Simon Corble - www.corble.co.uk It was only at this point that Cathy told me she suffered from vertigo - Brave lass!

Macbeth 1993. For our inner-city venue in Manchester, the setting was the half derelict flats of Hulme shortly before demolition. Catriona Martin as Duncan (yes, a deliberate echo of Thatcher's infamous "tank driver" outfit) hands the traitor's head to Nigel Pugh as (?). Pat Bridgman as Banquo, Robin Samson as Ross, Tony Cairns as Malcolm and Peter Cockett as Macduff. Macbeth out of shot preparing for a big speech. Robin Samson as the Mock Turtle, prepares to sing "Soup of the Evening" to Alice (Catriona Martin) and The Gryphon (Rob Alexander). The dry fountain was later restored to full working order...in Albert Square, Manchester, its original home and can be seen there to this day.

What a fantastic sight it was to emerge from the dark woodland into this glade, abaze with shrubs in flower and this awaiting the audience for A Mad Teaparty. Great design by Judith Croft. Rob Alexander is the March Hare (it is HIS garden!), with Dormouse (Robin Samson) and The Mad Hatter (Peter Clifford).
