................................................................................................................................................................................

I really really wanted to see this open air museum! so only a beach holiday to Hurhade could not satisfy me. As i child i went to the National Museum of Antiquities in Holland and was fascinated.
Since Cairo was a little to far and restless, Luxor it would be. We went there by bus, and also the way through the dessert was an experience. Al the emules, people, busstops, speedbumps (just a pile of asphalt on the road) i loved it. Next time i go with husband with kids, and on a private tour so we have loads more time in Karnak!

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karnak
The Karnak Temple Complex—usually called Karnak—comprises a vast mix of decayed temples, chapels, pylons, and other buildings. Building at the complex began in the reign of Sesostris I in the Middle Kingdom and continued into the Ptolemaic period, although most of the extant buildings date from the New Kingdom. The area around Karnak was the ancient Egyptian Ipet-isut ("The Most Selected of Places") and the main place of worship of the eighteenth dynasty Theban Triad with the god Amun as its head. It is part of the monumental city of Thebes. The Karnak complex takes its name from the nearby, and partly surrounded, modern village of el-Karnak, some 2.5 km north of Luxor.

nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karnak_(Egypte)
Karnak (Arabisch: الكرنك, Al Karnak: 'versterkt dorp') is een dorp in Egypte.

Last week was a bit of a culture shock. A great idea with only a week of preparation.
A week of holiday escaping the cold to the wonderful seaside shores of Hurghada.
So close to Luxor, i could not resist to book a bus tour with my friend to see the many wonders of the old egyptians.

After an early wake up call (4:30), we were off to Luxor by tour buss. A 3 (egyptian) hrs drive to Luxor trough te slowly ligthing desert was waiting for us. Amazing rays of sun gave color to the desert mountains as we picked up our personal under cover police agent who was specially assigned to our "dutch" bus. (What a job :( from 6am till 10pm and no one talking to you).

The bus supposed to be brand new, leaving the fabric in 2012... but like more things in Egypt, nothing is what the seems te be. It could not spoil our anticipation of the comming wonders.
Stopping in the middle op the dessert for a 15 pound (approx 2 euro) cup of coffee at a bedouin coffeeshop was a cold shower waking us up.

Lots of information from the tour guide, (who was quite a good dutch speaker ) and al the visual information from the outside made me silent. Egypt is so beautiful but also so different than Europe, almost like a culture shock.

I will post some more photos soon with some of the impressions and stories. For now i make it an early night.

This photo was the last stop in Luxor before returning to Hurghada. Medinet Habu is a underrated tempel with a lot less tourists than Hatsjepsoet. During sunset, (being alsmost alone in the temple) the light did spectacular things with the structures, hieroglyphs and with me. I was stunned, flabergasted.

The tourguide warned us about the guides in the temple. But they new the nicest places. So with to friends I followed them. After showing us some great places we took photo's with them and of course gave them a little money which is normal in Egypt and keeps the economy and families running.
HABU TEMPLE

in dutch : nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tempel_van_Ramses_III_(Medinet_Haboe)

www.touregypt.net/featurestories/habu.htm
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medinet_Habu_(temple)
Medinet Habu is the name commonly given to the Mortuary Temple of Ramesses III, an important New Kingdom period structure in the location of the same name on the West Bank of Luxor in Egypt. Aside from its intrinsic size and architectural and artistic importance, the temple is probably best known as the source of inscribed reliefs depicting the advent and defeat of the Sea Peoples during the reign of Ramesses III.

Description
The temple, some 150 m long, is of orthodox design, and resembles closely the nearby mortuary temple of Ramesses II (the Ramesseum). The temple precinct measures approximately 700 ft (210 m). by 1,000 ft (300 m) and contains more than 75,350 sq ft (7,000 m2) of decorated wall reliefs.[1] Its walls are relatively well preserved and it is surrounded by a massive mudbrick enclosure, which may have been fortified. The original entrance is through a fortified gate-house, known as a migdol (a common architectural feature of Asiatic fortresses of the time).
Just inside the enclosure, to the south, are chapels of Amenirdis I, Shepenupet II and Nitiqret, all of whom had the title of Divine Adoratrice of Amun.
The first pylon leads into an open courtyard, lined with colossal statues of Ramesses III as Osiris on one side, and uncarved columns on the other. The second pylon leads into a peristyle hall, again featuring columns in the shape of Ramesses. This leads up a ramp that leads (through a columned portico) to the third pylon and then into the large hypostyle hall (which has lost its roof). Reliefs and actual heads of foreign captives were also found placed within the temple perhaps in an attempt to symbolise the king's control over Syria and Nubia.
In Coptic times, there was a church inside the temple structure, which has since been removed. Some of the carvings in the main wall of the temple have been altered by coptic carvings.

Excavation
Initial excavation of the temple took place sporadically between 1859 and 1899, under the auspices of the Egyptian Antiquities Service. During these decades the main temple was cleared, a large number of Coptic period buildings removed and the site made accessible to visitors.
The further excavation, recording and conservation of the temple has been facilitated in chief part by the Architectural and Epigraphic Surveys of University of Chicago's Oriental Institute, almost continuously since 1924.

The Royal Palace was directly connected with the first courtyard of the Temple via the "Window of Appearances".
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colossi_of_Memnon

The Colossi of Memnon (known to locals as el-Colossat, or es-Salamat) are two massive stone statues of Pharaoh Amenhotep III. For the past 3400 years (since 1350 BC) they have stood in the Theban necropolis, across the River Nile from the modern city of Luxor.

The twin statues depict Amenhotep III (fl. 14th century BC) in a seated position, his hands resting on his knees and his gaze facing eastwards (actually SSE in modern bearings) towards the river. Two shorter figures are carved into the front throne alongside his legs: these are his wife Tiy and mother Mutemwiya. The side panels depict the Nile god Hapy.
The statues are made from blocks of quartzite sandstone which was quarried at el-Gabal el-Ahmar (near modern-day Cairo) and transported 675 km (420 mi) overland to Thebes. (They are too heavy to have been transported upstream on the Nile.)[citation needed] The blocks used by later Roman engineers to reconstruct the eastern colossus may have come from Edfu (north of Aswan). Including the stone platforms on which they stand – themselves about 4 m (13 ft) – the colossi reach a towering 18 m (60 ft) in height and weigh an estimated 720 tons each [1][2][3] The two figures are about 15 m (50 ft) apart.
Both statues are quite damaged, with the features above the waist virtually unrecognizable. The western (or southern) statue is a single piece of stone, but the eastern (or northern) figure has a large extentive crack in the lower half and above the waist consists of 5 tiers of stone. These upper levels consist of a different type of sandstone, and are the result of a later (Roman Empire) reconstruction attempt. It is believed that originally the two statues were identical to each other, although inscriptions and minor art may have varied.
The original function of the Colossi was to stand guard at the entrance to Amenhotep's memorial temple (or mortuary temple): a massive cult centre built during the pharaoh's lifetime, where he was worshipped as a god-on-earth both before and after his departure from this world. In its day, this temple complex was the largest and most opulent in Egypt. Covering a total of 35 hectares (86 acres), even later rivals such as Ramesses II's Ramesseum or Ramesses III's Medinet Habu were unable to match it in area; even the Temple of Karnak, as it stood in Amenhotep's time, was smaller.

Side panel detail showing two flanked relief images of the deity Hapi and, to the right, a sculpture of the royal wife Tiy
With the exception of the Colossi, however, very little remains today of Amenhotep's temple. Standing on the edge of the Nile floodplain, successive annual inundations gnawed away at the foundations – a famous 1840s lithograph by David Roberts shows the Colossi surrounded by water – and it was not unknown for later rulers to dismantle, purloin, and reuse portions of their predecessors' monuments.

Memnon was a hero of the Trojan War, a King of Ethiopia who led his armies from Africa into Asia Minor to help defend the beleaguered city but was ultimately slain by Achilles. The name Memnon means "Ruler of the Dawn", and was probably applied to the colossi because of the reported cry at dawn of one of the statues (see below). Eventually, the entire Theban Necropolis became generally referred to as the Memnonium.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In 27 v.

nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Papyruszuil
