I flushed a covey of partridges in the road in front of me. Predictably they flew off as I approached but I noticed that they landed on the verge, drivers side and adjacent to a thick hedge. I figured that if I approached slowly they would fly off ahead of my but if I approached quickly and stopped next to them they would have nowhere to go and might freeze instead of flying. So I got camera ready, put my foot down and stopped abruptly right next to them. The plan worked, though I only got one shot before they scarpered.

I’m indebted to Sparky Faísca for an absolutely fantastic day out. He and Julio Caldas showed me round all the good birding sites around Lisbon’s Tejo Estuary including Barroca d’Alva, Pancas and Ponta da Erva where so many of their wonderful photos are taken.
