This guy was flying around free near the water that runs through a zoo in central Mexico. It's an interesting place with some unique animals but out of all the animals there this was the most beautiful that caught my eye. This is the only time I have ever seen a dragonfly with amber-colored wings.

YES, this really tasted as good as it looks... My last breakfast at the buffet in Huatulco last May. It was the best vacation EVER. Much of that has to do with the fact that I got to go with my sister and her family. The rest of it had to do with a little known location (only open now for 10 years) and a great "all inclusive" resort.

When I was just seven years old I lived in Oaxaca. We stayed there during my dad's two years as a commercial lawyer for the government tobacco and coffee industries. We got to know all the cool stuff in the area - even fried grasshoppers.

It was so exciting to get to go back and try the grasshoppers again and even get a lesson in the regional drink Mezcal which accompanies the delicious crispy critters. Now that I'm an adult that was a new and very enjoyable part of the tradition for me.

I can't tell you everything about the trip in one photo but you can just imagine that if the buffet food included with the hotel stay was THIS good then the rest was even better.

Can you tell I love papaya? You just can't get papaya this good in the States... sigh.

Each year these gorgeous beetles come out in droves around Tucson just before the monsoons. They are fantastic and huge. This one came by and was kind enough to let me take his photo. There's a better shot of his body attached below if you'd like to see it.

"The pine sawyer is one of the largest beetles in urbanized areas of southern California. It belongs to the long-horned beetle family (Cerambycidae) The large, pale larva, up to 2 1/2 inches (6.3 cm) long, feeds on the wood of fallen logs and old conifer stumps. The adult beetle in above photo is over 3 inches long (including the extended antennae). It has a pair of powerful jaws (mandibles) that are capable of inflicting a painful pinch. At least they can leave an imprint on a piece of cardboard! The adults emerge from subterranean stumps in early summer. They are nocturnal and are attracted to lights."
